Spoken Soul Festival 2019 - SWAN Day MIAMI

Women Empowering The Soul Through Art, Advocacy & Creativity

The mission of the Spoken Soul Festival, a three-day event, is to produce an annual festival that will help advance the careers of a variety of women artists including poets, fine artists, photographers, filmmakers, and designers.

Winner of Miami New Times “Best Place to Meet Intelligent Women,” this year’s festival theme is #WordIsBond.  We aim to celebrate the impact of the spoken and written word in our community. In the age of social media, our words no longer have boundaries and can reach millions changing how our society interacts. #WordIsBond is a commentary on the power of our word.

Spoken Soul Festival 2019 is set to honor our roots as a festival for poets and celebrates our evolution to the development and showcasing of women artists of all genres. This special CALL FOR WOMEN ARTISTS is specifically seeking women artists from South Florida of ALL genres (ALL ages) that are willing to collaborate with other women artists to create new works based on our #WordIsBond theme. The new works must have strong poetry, spoken word, and or storytelling as the highlight of the piece.

This CALL FOR WOMEN ARTISTS is also open to women artist collectives that have works matching our theme and are willing to “revamp” their works.

We hope our call for action inspires the return of integrity to how we use the spoken and written word.

Call out: Both Sides Now with Fatima Al Qadiri

We’re looking for emerging female musicians, producers, visual artists and performance artists to take part in this exciting cross-artform residency led by composer, producer and conceptual artist Fatima Al Qadiri, developed in collaboration with curator and researcher Amal Khalaf.

Based at the People’s History Museum in Manchester across four days (9-12 July), you’ll collaborate to create new work inspired by the current exhibition Represent! Voices 100 Years Onwhich reflects on those who campaigned for better representation (most famously the suffragettes) and asks ‘How far have we really come in 100 years?’

The residency will culminate in a live showcase performance as part of ‘Radical Lates’ at the museum on Thursday 12 July.

This opportunity is aimed at musicians, producers or artists at the beginning of their career who are looking to develop their creative practice – and would benefit from working alongside experienced and established artists.

“The works of the greatest artists in contemporary times are effectively large-scale collaborative works. Glance at the credits of any major album, solo exhibition or film and you’ll see that timelessness is seldom a solo pursuit. The objective of this residency is to work together with artists to leave the self behind and be open to the possibilities that occur when working collaboratively.” – Fatima Al Qadiri

To apply you must be:

  • 18+
  • Female, or identify as female (we use an inclusive definition of ‘women’ and ‘female’, welcoming participants who may identify as non-binary, cis-gendered, or trans)
  • Based in Greater Manchester and surrounding area
  • Available between 9-12 July

Deadline: Monday 25 June, midnight

Notification for successful applicants: Friday 29 June

Successful participants will receive £20 per day to help towards the cost of travel and food.

For more information contact Lucy Scott at lucys@brightersound.com / 0161 830 3899

This residency is part of Both Sides Now – our initiative to support, inspire and showcase women in music across the North of England.

*We’re committed to supporting and meeting the needs of people with learning difficulties or disabilities. If you require the application in a different format or have difficulty completing your application online, please call us to discuss alternative options on 0161 830 3899.
