ABOUT OUR GUEST CURATOR

SPE Media Fest

The SPE (Society for Photographic Education) Media Festival (originally the SPE Women's Film Festival) has featured innovative and provocative short documentaries, animation and fiction by, for and about women and minorities since 1995. Due to COVID-10, the 2021 Media Fest will be held online for five days, March 17-21, during the 2021 SPE National Conference. The SPE Media Fest will be available online to the public without charge for five days only. The theme of the conference is Imagining Legacy: Archives, Collections, and Memoria. Narrative, documentary, animated and experimental shorts under 30 minutes, that address issues of concern to minorities, women, global or LGBTQ communities, human rights, or the conference theme are eligible. All rights must be cleared.

SUPERNATURAL WOMEN

The theme Supernatural Women opens up questions of culture, history, legend, politics, femininity and womanhood. Participants may decide to focus only on a tiny segment of the theme for their work. For example, they might focus on just one woman. Or, they might look at a group of supernatural women. They may opt not to focus on specific women, but on a female element of the supernatural that is widely known, or that could be invented by the artist.

The content of discussions during the residency will be determined by the work undertaken by participants. Some participants might plan to produce deeply conceptual work. For others the process will be more practical. Others will work on a mixture of both.

Women's Art Via Engagement

In addition to other subjects of interest to women,  artists are encouraged to create and submit art that tells a story about violence against women & girls -whether in the past or current. We gather art for display that shows how violence against women & girls is happening now, and how it's use in the past shows how women have been controlled through fear.

Rape keeps women from going outside and having a full life. Domestic violence keeps women in abusive relationships and away from their own personal power. Honor killings keep women from leading full lives & having options. These are just a few ways that women are controlled by violence.

Call out for 16-25’s: Electric Storm

Create your own ‘Electric Storm’ on this 5-day residency for adventurous music creators, producers, sound designers and digital artists.

Aimed at women and non-binary people as part of our gender equality programme Both Sides Now, this is a unique opportunity to push your creative boundaries, develop your technical skills and collaborate with like-minded artists.

This project marks the 50th anniversary of an album called ‘An Electric Storm’ by White Noise, a group which featured Delia Derbyshire, an early pioneer of electronic music. Best known for her iconic realisation of the Dr Who theme tune, Delia produced music way ahead of her time, even after being told by Decca Records in 1957 that the recording studio was “no place for a woman”.
