The Witching Hour Volume II: A Quaranzine

Eligibility:

Last October, we celebrated some of the most bewitching artists and enchanting works at our first annual The Witching Hour exhibition. I’d love nothing more than to revive such a wicked soirée. However, it is imperative that we prioritize our health and safety while COVID continues to leave heartbreak and devastation in its wake.

Providing artists any opportunity to feature their work is vital. It is vital when many of us feel our art practice serves no substantial purpose. It is vital when we feel the knowledge we have should be that of saving lives rather than shading and color theory. It is vital when our voices feel lost. We need these gentle reminders of the power we have. We give voices to the voiceless. We see, and do, and share what those who cease to be no longer can.

And so, to continue celebrating those who give the silenced a voice, we are proud to present THE WITCHING HOUR VOLUME II: A QUARANZINE.

Zines have long been a vehicle for communicating the unusual//unconventional//unorthodox ideas held by counter-culture dwellers. Their DIY nature and small-scale appearance felt like the perfect form for this exhibition to acclimate. We are seeking artists and artworks that embrace the otherness of the non-hetero//non-cis//non-white//non-male that society has oppressed, cast aside and deemed nefarious.

If you feel like you fit in with the outcasts, we highly encourage you to apply! Each applicant will receive a free copy of the finished zine regardless of whether or not they were accepted. We can’t wait for the chance to see your work!

Please submit art, photography, writing, poetry, and everything in between in response to the theme: CONSCIOUSNESS

Heavy Iridescent is a zine looking to publish your art, photography, writing, poetry, and everything in between.

We want the hyper-specific in tension with the general. Your heavy ideas, and the weight of the everyday. We want glittering colours, soap bubble thoughts, bright flashes of personality and instances of intense feeling. Give us bold experiments, vibrating phrases, eye-punching visuals and deep emotion.

THEME OF ISSUE #1 CONSCIOUSNESS

Please interpret this theme however you'd like; the weirder the better! If you’re unsure of where to start have a look at these questions for inspiration:

What does consciousness look like? How does it feel? Do you control it or does it control you? Does consciousness need to be defined in human terms? Can AI be conscious? Have you ever questioned what was real?

Eligibility:

This is for call content. But it’s not a call for just any kind of content. This is a call for specific content, from specific people. This is a call for content from the lonely, the misunderstood, the anxious, the hopeful, the misgendered, the marginalized, the radical-in-other’s-eyes-but-not-so-radical-in-your-own, the politicized, the relatively unscathed, the visionaries.

This is a call for the unspoken memories, the thoughts that run rampant, the words that went unsaid, the spiral after spiral, the dirty, the clean, and the (absolutely) in between, the revolutionary, but then again, not so revolutionary after all.

In the midst of crisis, we seek to inspire and bring beauty to the foreground.

We’re looking to explore what it means to be behind the binary, mentally and emotionally, through art. we are looking for inventive and creative takes on this theme, which inspires reflections on community, mental health, identity, and expression. The purpose of this zine is to not only build solidarity among non-binary persons and their shared experiences, but also to bring allies further into the fold of understanding.

What: a zine. a really great zine! we are pulling together a zine from all kinds of creators in Chicago to accompany an upcoming short film, By a Thread, centering around similar themes. We’re looking to build community in an interdisciplinary fashion.

Who: Co-editors: Tuxford Turner and Imani Davis

Themes: loneliness, mental health, anxiety, (longing for) community, gender identity exploration, “in between”-ness,

Media: absolutely anything that can be printed on a page, including but not limited to:

Poetry

Essays

Photography

Drawings & Sketches

Comics

Short Stories

Photos of fashion, ceramics, paintings, etc.

Creator Requirements: be currently living in the Chicagoland area, and be a dope ass human being. ***we ESPECIALLY encourage people who identify outside of the gender binary to apply.

Content Requirements: we are going for a certain aesthetic for the overall piece so keep that in mind for more visually stimulating content such as photography, paintings, etc. Entries of any kind should not exceed 2 pages double spaced. The submission deadline is May 13, 2020. Limit five submissions per person.

Prize summary:
Featured Cover Artist - $50 prize
Prizes Details:

Free entry! There is a $50 prize for our featured cover artist which will be the first page of the zine.

About TWF:

Through TWF we investigate the invisible, the underground, the underrated and emerging. We acknowledge the pioneering and grass-roots groups that help to sustain the creative transactions between local heritage and art, promote the cultural currencies that bear the essence, character and unique idiosyncrasies of Folkestone and draw parallels to far beyond.

By employing journalistic investigations, philosophical essays, poetry, photography and fiction, TWF challenges the cultural status-quo by presenting together diverse local and International voices.

About Risograph:

Risograph or ‘riso’ is an environmentally friendly printer, which uses soy-based inks to produce unique outcomes, working best with recycled papers. The transparency of the soy-based ink lends to riso’s special methods of colour mixing, the textural results of riso range from crisp to noisy, and the registration of slight inaccuracies are what contribute to the prints expressive and distinctive nature.
