Summary Chitra Ramanathan is a contemporary Indian American visual artist and art educator. Her distinguished, predominantly large-scale abstract conceptual mixed media and acrylic paintings are in corporate and private collections as acquisitions, and featured as site-specific public art installations including murals. Infused with intense colors and multiple layers of varied textural materials incorporated into the paint, each of the artist's unique originals interact with light as to visually and physically extend the boundaries of the two-dimensional surface. Inspired by intensely colorful, yet ephemeral garden blooms and changing seasons the artist to visually portray happiness, comparing both fleeting and cyclical. The hint of circles almost always present in the works signify the cycle of nature. Chitra Ramanathan received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1993, majoring in Painting with honors, and her M.B.A in 1997 with concentrations in Human Resources and Art Museum Administration from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Following her B.F.A degree, her paintings were recognized by art critics through exhibitions on Broadway, New York, with numerous originals acquired within the U.S and abroad and site-specific public art commissions based on her style and concept. Interviews with the artist by eclectic publications with biography and images have been featured in various magazine and book publications include Who’s Who in America,, the Internet Movie Database (IMDB), International Contemporary Artists, Vol 1. available on, the Indianapolis Business Journal, Indianapolis Monthly Home, Luxury Real Estate Magazine among others. Chitra Ramanathan is a Visitor Artist invitee to the Royal Academy of Arts, London U.K, requested by the Keeper of the Royal Academy Schools for a visual presentation of her body of work, artist talk, tour completed along with conducting student tutorials in 2005. Public Art Commissions |Site-specific, Permanent and Temporary Installations Fine Artist in Painting October 1995 – Present 22 years 11 months Miami/Fort Lauderdale Area Treated with fresh bright colors and intricately interwoven textural materials, each unique, colorful piece is executed intuitively with rapid brush strokes. In many cases, the expansive scale or multi-paneled works are suitable for large venues such as lobby areas of public spaces. (Small-sized custom-created work have also been commissioned). The established artist's process evolves continually with each developing piece being infused with new art materials, the luminous surfaces treated with primarily acrylic mediums or mixed media, often dense with collage and imagery, and cutting-edge techniques. Site-specific commissions in the United States include a pair of large signed acrylic and mixed media paintings housed in the Bellagio Conservatory at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada since 2004 at the request of MGM Resorts International, wall mural created at Crooked Creek Elementary School, Indianapolis, Indiana in 2008, a pair of large paintings featured in the College of Medicine at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Illinois since 1996, five large paintings commissioned by the Arts Council of Indianapolis as a temporary installation in downtown Indianapolis in 2006. Private commissions include a three paneled painting or triptych for the CEO of Biaggis Restaurant, Bloomington, Illinois in 2016 and large painting created for a private client in Boston, Massachusetts in February 2018.
