- About -

Society dictates that people express themselves in a way that is considered "normal." Despite some progression toward increased tolerance, people who openly embody a non-traditional gender, lifestyle, or way of thinking, often face cynicism, discrimination, and sometimes even violence. In this way, society works to maintain traditional power structures and thus diminish people's power as individuals. The people that appear in my paintings are friends and family; people who take a critical stance when it comes to the rules of society.
They are individuals who live authentically, despite the criticism and rejection they often face as a result. My intention in this work is to demonstrate that we live in a world where we are compelled to follow societal norms whether or not they are helpful in forging a healthy and happy society. Instead, I feel that people should live in a way that makes them feel whole and true to themselves, and should appreciate others for doing the same. Everyone has the right to create their own identity and make their place in this world, and the world is becomes a better place when people do just that.
