Space A is Kathmandu (Nepal) based non-governmental autonomous, non-political, no- profitable, and the Artist Initiative with the goal of establishing a stable platform for critical analysis, reflections, open discussions, information exchange, collaboration, and interactive communication. It aims at contributing to interdisciplinary contemporary art practices by setting up research, discursive events, exhibitions, and educational, and residency programs.

Kathmandu international artist-in-residence program (KIAR) is an initiative of Space A, a significant hub in the field of contemporary art both locally and internationally. The goal of the KIAR is to create an intellectual space where the residents will get the chance to penetrate the local cultural and socio-political contexts, as well as to combine their artistic practices (research, production, etc.) with meetings, lectures, and other discursive events with local and international artists, cultural experts, critics, and curators.

Brief Description of Residency

Nepal is a remarkable destination for travelers seeking the best value. Its cultural and physical landscapes are incredibly diverse and captivating. The awe-inspiring Himalayas, with their majestic snow-covered peaks, offer an unforgettable sight and make Nepal a prime location for accessing these natural wonders. From lush subtropical valleys adorned with banana trees to serene alpine forests inhabited by yaks, Nepal showcases a range of landscapes that will leave you in awe.

The customs and traditions across Nepal vary from region to region, creating a rich tapestry of cultural heritage. Nowhere is this blend more evident than in the capital city of Kathmandu, where different cultures harmoniously merge to form a unique national identity. For centuries, the Kathmandu Valley has been the cultural heart of the country since Nepal’s unification in the 18th Century. Religion holds a significant place in the daily lives of Nepalese, and their year-round celebrations of vibrant festivals bring color, joy, and vitality to their existence. Furthermore, food plays a crucial role in these festivities, adding flavorsome delight to the celebrations.

Surrounding the capital, a valley teems with historical sites, ancient temples, shrines, and captivating villages. Kathmandu is a city of extraordinary diversity, boasting awe-inspiring Newari architecture and centuries-old Hindu and Buddhist religious sites. Stepping foot in Kathmandu feels like entering a different realm—one that everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime. The city embodies a fusion of diverse cultures, lifestyles, a long history of faith and beliefs, and remarkable arts and architecture. Therefore, Kathmandu is more than a city; it is a living, open museum waiting to be explored.

KIAR provides a unique opportunity to travel back in time and immerse yourself in history while basking in Nepal’s natural beauty. We are thrilled to organize two residency programs—a one-month-long residency spanning 30 days and a two-month-long residency spanning 60 days. For each program, we will select a maximum of two applicants. As an additional offering, KIAR can arrange a 7-day trekking experience during the residency program for interested participants. However, please note that all expenses related to trekking will be the responsibility of the participants.

The trekking options available include the Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) trek, the Langtang track, and the Mardi track. These treks will enable you to witness Nepal’s breathtaking landscapes up close and create unforgettable memories amidst nature’s grandeur.
