ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE REQUIRED

Fixed term contract for 1 academic year (September 2020 to July 2021). Actual Salary is £12,120 per annum for Term Time only working

Are you a practicing Artist who welcomes the challenge of working with students in groups and individually?

Would you like to help and encouraging young people with special needs to develop their artistic opportunities, fine-motor skills and creativity?

St Joseph's Specialist Trust is looking to employ an Artist-in-Residence to practice within their own studio at the centre of our site and offer specialist workshops and creative input across our learning curriculum.

This is the 6th year of our Artist-in- Residence programme and each artist has had a very different specialism.  We are very open about particular art forms, which could include performance and sound.  The important thing is that your discipline might be something our students engage with and learn from.

St Joseph’s is very different to a mainstream school. We are a special school, college, children’s home and adult supported living houses. Our main site is located in Cranleigh, Surrey, midway between Guildford and Horsham. Our students are age 5-19 with severe social communication difficulties and complex learning disabilities. With your compassion, empathy and guidance, you will help them develop their creativity, relative to their complex needs.

Sometimes our students may get frustrated, anxious and emotional. We will give you comprehensive training including learning about safeguarding, autism and positive behaviour support. We will equip you with the confidence to creatively support our young people, offer them boundaries and choices and provide safe and effective physical intervention if needed, whilst also having the space and opportunity to work on your own artistic projects.

Applicants must have a portfolio that highlights past and current practice and includes details of plans for future projects comprising what they would work on during their residency at the Trust.

Ideally, hours of attendance each week will be 8.30am – 4.00pm Monday, 8.30am – 4.15pm Tuesday to Thursday and 8.30am – 3.45pm on Friday during term time only (35.5 hours per week). At least 10 hours per week will be spent delivering workshops across the School. However, there is some flexibility regarding the hours depending on the circumstances and commitments of the artist.  Travel expenses will be available for the right candidate. If you are recruited, you will be required to complete Team Teach positive behaviour support training as part of your induction before employment.

Very occasional evening and weekend work may be required as part of these contracted hours; equally the Trust is prepared to allow an element of flexibility for the successful applicant to undertake other professional commitments. Holiday must be taken during the school holidays although up to 5 days (consecutive or otherwise) may be taken in term time (with the equivalent amount of time being made up by either evening/weekend/school holiday working).
