Responsibilities:

  • General Art Movement
    • Responsible for object movement and retrieval for all areas of the museum including off site
    • Responsible for installation/de-installation of collection & loans in galleries
    • Assist with loading and unloading of crates to & from delivery trucks
    • Works with registrars to retrieve frames from offsite storage
  • General Gallery Maintenance
    • Removes and replaces substitute works of art being prepared to go on loan
    • Assists conservation in the rotation of manuscripts & other works on paper
    • Installs case security hardware, cleans vitrines, repairs/touch-up wall and pedestals as needed
    • Retrieves requested objects from cases in galleries for visiting scholars and conservators
  • Collection Maintenance
    • Collaborates with registrars to maintain care of the collection in storage and in galleries
    • Works in storage to accommodate space for incoming/returning works to the collection
    • Maintains daily tracking of art movement throughout museum
    • Carries of maintenance of shop tools, carts, lifts and related material
  • Fabrication
    • Collaborates with conservation on design of brass mounts to display objects
    • Collaborates with conservation to design and construct cradles to display manuscripts
    • Assists with the fabrication and assembly of display components such as cases and interiors
    • May be required to mat and frame works on paper
  • Other Duties
    • Shifting material in storage to create more room
    • Help with removal of display cases to and from wood shop
    • Help in the construction of temporary storage
    • Prepare/build temporary pallets for transport/storage

Requirements:

  • AA or BFA or equivalent museum experience
  • Knowledge of museum practices related to art handling, packing, rigging and mount fabrication
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Skilled in use of power/hand tools
  • Must be able to follow directives
  • Strong manual dexterity
  • Ability to work on feet for a sustained length of time
