GARNER Arts Center, a non-profit organization located in an historic mill complex 35 miles north of Manhattan in New York’s lower Hudson Valley, invites applications for the position of Programs & Operations Director to assist the organization in its next phase of growth.

  Job Purpose

Under supervision of the President, the Programs and Operations Director will develop, coordinate and administer all of GARNER Arts Center’s programs.  Duties include planning, organizing, staffing, implementing, supervising and evaluating program activities in accordance with the standards set out by GARNER Arts Center.  The Program Director also participates in fundraising, grant applications, marketing, budgeting and strategic planning initiatives.  He/she works within the guidelines, policies and mission of the organization and will be accountable and responsible for the programs.

                                                                                                                       

Primary Duties and Responsibilities                                                                                               

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Program Development

  • Execute existing and develop and implement new program initiatives to support the strategic direction and goals of GARNER Arts Center, and recommend strategies for implementing long-term objectives, including fundraising and donor development, in support of GARNER Arts Center’s programs and strategic objectives;
  • Determine program priorities and budgetary needs, develop annual program budgets and operating plans to support ongoing and new programming and prepare recommendations and reports for the President;
  • Manage and monitor budgeted expenditures and track revenue for the programs according to established accounting policies and procedures, and ensure that the programs operate within the approved budgets;
  • Prepare grant applications and funding proposals, and seek sponsorship opportunities to help secure continuous program operations.

Program Delivery

  • Implement, supervise and evaluate all activities related to GARNER Arts Center programs;
  • Plan, administer, manage and execute artistic events and programs, including fundraising events, for GARNER Arts Center.  Programs may include but are not limited to Encounters with the Arts, GARNER Arts Festival or L.A.B. Fest, Brick Alley Block Party, Autumn Electronix Festival, CREEKSIDE Music Series, Outdoor Shorts Film  Festival, Contemporary Classical Series, Exhibitions and  Sculpture Trail;       
  • Direct and coordinate the work of the program staff and/or volunteers including orientation, supervision and evaluation of such staff and/or volunteers; and develop strategies to expand the number of volunteers;
  • In consultation with the President, recruit, interview and select well-qualified program staff and/or volunteers to carry out the program activities;
  • Develop, implement and evaluate recruitment strategies to expand the number of participants in programs;
  • Develop program tracking systems for the effective analysis and evaluation of program activities, performance and participation;
  • Establish general policy and procedures for the delivery of program services;
  • Organize and attend  meetings as may be requested by the President in support of new and ongoing programs, and so as to maintain effective communication;
  • Create reports on the programs for the President for use by the Board of Directors, funders and other stakeholders.

Community Access

  • Conduct outreach and promote GARNER Arts Center to the regional community in support of GARNER Arts Center’s programs and strategic objectives;
  • Function as a community resource and liaison for the arts by identifying and seeking appropriate partnerships and alliances for the delivery of GARNER Arts Center’s programs, such as with civic, arts and educational/school groups; and attending and participating in local community/civic/arts/educational meetings when deemed appropriate;
  • Communicate with participants and other stakeholders to gain community support for GARNER Arts Center programs;
  • Assist in the development and implementation of a strategic marketing plan, including advertising, public relations, press releases, social media, community outreach and collateral materials.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 to 5 years of experience in arts administration, program development, management and coordination in a related field, i.e. visual or performing arts or arts education. Bachelor’s degree or higher education preferred;
  • Strong problem-solving skills, fiscal management experience, planning and group work leadership skills;
  • Ability to interact with people of all ages and all economic and cultural backgrounds;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
  • Social media marketing skills, including Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and more;
  • Up to date computer skills with proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint); Google docs, Squarespace, etc.; familiarity with fundraising software a plus;
  • Effective oral and written communication skills;
  • Experience with grant writing and procedures;
  • Fundraising experience;
  • Ability to work flexible hours including some evenings and weekends;
  • Access to a vehicle.

This is a full-time position Salary: $49,000 annually.

Note: Continuation of the Programs and Operations Director position is dependent on the continuation of New York State Council on the Arts funding.
