The Studio Museum in Harlem is the nexus for artists of African descent locally, nationally and internationally and for work that has been inspired and influenced by black culture. It is a site for the dynamic exchange of ideas about art and society. The Museum’s Internship Program provides college undergraduates, graduate students, and recent graduates with a wide range of experiences designed to provide insight into the daily workings of a professional museum environment. In addition to working on meaningful, engaging projects with Museum staff, interns engage in a series of meetings, workshops, offsite visits to arts and cultural institutions, and public programs. Internship descriptions by department are posted on our website. The Fall 2018 Internship cycle runs from September 10–December 14, 2018 and requires a minimum commitment of 20 hours per week.

The Communications Intern will work closely with the Communications team to perform functions critical to communicating the Studio Museum's mission and offerings to press and our diverse audiences, as well as assist with digital engagement via the Studio Museum's social media channels. The Communications Intern will learn about institutional voice, communications strategy and media relations best practices. The intern will be responsible for drafting copy for social media and other projects; image filing and cataloguing; conducting research and organizing inventory for Studio magazine, the Museum's seasonal publication; and assisting with website content management as needed. The intern will also assist with press monitoring, which will include maintaining the Studio Museum's digital press archive, clipping, and preparing press kits.

Applicants must possess excellent writing and communication skills, a superb attention to detail, be highly organized and able to work independently. Must demonstrate familiarity with social media, proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (specifically InDesign and Photoshop) and online email marketing tools (Mailchimp).

The Communications Internship is designed for mature undergraduate, graduate students or recent graduate interested in careers in Arts Communication, Media Studies, Social Marketing, Arts Administration, or related fields.
