CONNECTION

Call for Artists

CONNECTION EXHIBITION

The Creative Recycling Gallery invites artists based in Manchester or in the North West to submit artwork for the CONNECTION Exhibition in May 2020 during the Chortlon Art Festival.

We are looking for art that explores the concept of Connection.
What is connection?

How does your art make you feel connected?

Does your art help you to connect with yourself, with your community?

In a society that pushes us to feel more and more like individuals on their solo mission, disconnected from our neighbours and sometimes suspicious of diversity, we feel the need to talk about connection, the importance of community, of exploring connection to yourself and others

Routes into Music Facilitation

We’re offering three brand new opportunities to work with Brighter Sound as a music facilitator across our programme of work for children and young people.

The placements – one leading to a formal qualification and two paid traineeships – will offer practical, hands-on experience of music delivery in a workshop setting, shadowing experienced facilitators who are specialists in musically inclusive practice.

The roles are aimed at musicians who are committed to the development of their skills as a creative practitioner. The ideal candidates will be passionate about unlocking the creativity of children and young people through music making, and nurturing musical, social and personal progression.

Call out for 16-25’s: Electric Storm

Create your own ‘Electric Storm’ on this 5-day residency for adventurous music creators, producers, sound designers and digital artists.

Aimed at women and non-binary people as part of our gender equality programme Both Sides Now, this is a unique opportunity to push your creative boundaries, develop your technical skills and collaborate with like-minded artists.

This project marks the 50th anniversary of an album called ‘An Electric Storm’ by White Noise, a group which featured Delia Derbyshire, an early pioneer of electronic music. Best known for her iconic realisation of the Dr Who theme tune, Delia produced music way ahead of her time, even after being told by Decca Records in 1957 that the recording studio was “no place for a woman”.

Playing for Time - call out for 13-18's

We’re looking for one individual or group aged 13-18 to create a brand new piece of music in response to the current climate emergency.

As part of the project you’ll receive a budget of £200, support from a professional musician, and the opportunity to record your work and perform it live.

The theme

“We are right now at the beginning of a climate and ecological crisis. Now is not the time for speaking politely. Now is the time to speak clearly. We need to call it what it is: an emergency.”
Greta Thunberg

Call for submissions: Manchester - A Generic City?

Manchester -  A Generic City?  is a photography book focusing on architectural photography of Manchester in order to explore the idea of The Generic City (an idea proposed by Rem Koolhaas), and to what extent Manchester has come to meet the criteria for this. There has been a dramatic increase in the presence of postmodernist architecture within the city, due to a range of influences in the wake of globalisation, but there still remains a huge presence of architecture which references the city’s role in the industrial age. In a city where buildings of both eras stand prominently next to each other, are they competing visually, or is this a complementary relationship?
