Established in 2012 by artists for artists, Wells Art Contemporary (WAC) is an open competition for visual art. 

Based in the beautiful cathedral city of Wells, Somerset, this yearly exhibition aims to support creatives, stimulate debate, and push the boundaries of the visual arts scene both nationally and internationally. 

WAC gives contemporary artists the opportunity to show their work within Wells Cathedral, which welcomes 300,000 visitors a year.

All artists, all styles, all techniques and all nationalities are encouraged to take part in the open exhibition. 

Creatives over the age of 18, based in the UK or internationally can enter up to 4 works in any medium – painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, photography, installation or video. 

They can submit their work online before Tuesday 25 May 2021 via wac.artopps.co.uk

The 2021 shortlist and prize winners will be selected by a panel of distinguished artists including sculptor Will Nash and painter / sculptor / installation artist Simon Periton.

Prizes Details: 

The following prizes will be awarded:

·     Howden Art Award: £2,000 

·     People’s Choice Prize: £500 

·     Grace Student Awards: £100 to three students 

·     Somerset Art Works Festival Award: exhibition in the Somerset Art Works Festival 2022 

·     JGM Gallery Prize: works by selected artists will be showcased by JGM Gallery

·     NG Creative Art Residency:  a free two-week placement in Eygalières, Provence

·     Parker Harris Mentoring Prize: one-to-one mentoring covering professional development

Established in 2012, the competition has already established a strong presence in the London art world and is drawing artists from places as diverse as Australia, Azerbaijan, India, Italy, Korea, Japan and the United States, as well as all over Britain.

  • ChubbBulleid People’s Prize: £500
  • JGM Gallery Exhibition Prize: an exhibition in 2020 at the JGM Gallery
  • Next Generation Art Prize: a two-week solo exhibition at the Andelli Art Gallery
  • NG Creative Art Residency: a two-week placement at the NG Art Creative Residency in Provence

The Wells Art Contemporary (WAC) Awards are an open competition for contemporary art rapidly gaining praise in Britain and abroad. It was established in 2012 by a group of artists and their friends in Wells, the beautiful cathedral city in the South-West of England. This idea that came to life around a kitchen dining table has already established a strong presence in the London art world and is drawing artists from places as diverse as Australia, Azerbaijan, India, Italy, Korea, Japan and the United States, as well as all over Britain.

Artists over the age of 18, based in the UK or internationally, are invited to enter up to 4 works in any medium – painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, photography, installation or video. They can enter by online submission before Thursday 16 April 2020. The entry fee is £15 per work or £12 per work for students.

The Exhibition of shortlisted artworks will be held at the historic Wells Cathedral, Somerset, and be open to the public from 11 July – 9 August 2020, 9am – 4.30pm daily. All exhibitors will be invited to the Private View on Friday 10 July 2020.

Prizes Details: 

The following prizes will be awarded:

RK Harrison Award: £2,000 awarded to one artist.

JGM Gallery Exhibition Prize: Up to 4 artists, including international artists, will be selected to take part in an exhibition in 2020 at the JGM Gallery in the heart of London’s new cultural quarter next to the Royal College of Art in London.

Parker Harris Mentoring Prize: Parker Harris will give a one-to-one mentoring session covering all aspects of professional development to a selected artist.

ChubbBulleid People’s Prize: Selected by visitors of the exhibition.

Next Generation Art Prize: A two-week solo exhibition at the Andelli Art Gallery, including a private view and social media support, will be awarded to an artist up to 30 years of age. Mentoring and advice on working with galleries, curation and artistic development will also be offered.

The Wells Art Contemporary (WAC) Awards is an international open competition for contemporary visual arts which has already established a strong presence in the London art world and which is drawing artists from places as diverse as Australia, Azerbaijan, India, Italy, Korea, Japan and the United States. Open to artists working in painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, photography, installation or video, the WAC Awards aims to stimulate debate, challenge and provoke, pushing the boundaries of the visual arts scene both nationally and internationally. We are delighted to announce that the 2019 shortlisted works will be exhibited at an exciting new venue, Wells Cathedral, set in the medieval heart of England’s smallest city. The exhibition will take place from 20 July – 11 August 2019, and those selected will be eligible for a wide range of awards which include a cash prize, exhibition prizes and professional development opportunities. 

Applications for the WAC Awards 2019 must be made online and must be completed by 5pm on Monday 15 May 2019
