The photographic series "The kneeling Giantess" taken by Valentina Comito Viola of which I'm the performer, was made inside an abandoned house, in the military area of Latina's beach. The intention is to serarch for the fleeting and flexible point of contact between body, mind and environment, retracing those daily places, once lived. From the image emerges perceptions, feelings and emotions felt in contact with that abandoned and uncultivated environment, in this pic: the fear.

"Pills" by Bianca Ceriani

This is lithium, the main medicine used to treat bipolar disorder.

Mental health, for those dealing with psychiatric pathologies, often comes through medicines. The drug is likely seen by the patient as the sign of the illness, the material proof that something is wrong. Thus, those unable to accept their disease quite naturally end up with refusing pills. Yet pills are fundamental in saving a person struggling with mental health problems and sooner or later it is better to take them.

The path of accepting medicines is the path of accepting a psychiatric disorder, one that is similar to passing from self-stigma to opening up to one’s own difficulties and seeking help.

This is lithium and I have taken it for a long time.
This diptyc symbolises passing from closure to openness and is intended to be a photographic statement on my engagement in understanding and communicating that mental illness should be treated just like physical illness.

MALAMBO - mixed media photographic collage on paper 2020 (variable shape / 115x82cms when flattened)

Recently I have found myself tangled to someone I both believed I was in love with but that also hated in equal measure. I had a hard time in dealing with the reality of the situation and questioned both mine and this person mental health while trying to understand what made me obsessed in the first place despite all the clear signs of uncompatibility and manipulation.

I investigated the potential psychlogical traits of both of us and am currently still facing myself and the mistakes I've made in order to learn how I can better protect myself emotionally in the future.

This photographic project is the result is my attempt to use photography as art therapy and help me to move on and never forget that my vulnerability is not a weekness.

The work itself is rich of personal symbolic values which I cannot disclose but I like the idea of a casual viewer not being aware of them or the story behind it.

My intention was also to question the media of photography and blur lines between digital and analogue techniques.

SOLITUDE and LONELINESS project was developed in the summer of 2020, in a complex and difficult phase for the worldwide community, analyzing the fine line that exists between two feelings, SOLITUDE and LONELINESS where in the midst of a terrible pandemic, it was not only the virus that made people sick, the feeling of isolation is consuming more and more people's minds, some people were able to see this situation as an opportunity for growth, mental development and through the process of SOLITUDE find your true SELF, see the essence itself with clarity.

While some people have experienced the feeling of LONELINESS and are feeling their lives and minds consumed by a dense, distorted and heavy fog, where there is no distinction between thoughts and feelings.

During these long quarantine months, many people have experienced for the first time at least one of these two situations, SOLITUDE or LONELINESS.

Being alone at home away from family, friends and relationship partners, due to factors that are beyond our control, made some of us experience the feeling of being secluded inside the house and also within our own mind.

The loneliness

Is a state of an individual who feels alone.

Situations where you feel empty or something is missing in your life.

Some thoughts are distorted in your mind and there is no clarity as to whether you feel happy or sad. A fog over your thoughts form and you feel trapped within your cold and sad world.

The solitude

Whoever finds solitude is not afraid to be alone, even if the path is difficult and requires strength, finds pleasure in enjoying your own company, you learn to analyze your own feelings and thoughts, see the inner world clearly, have self-confidence through self-knowledge.

Through solitude it is possible to find yourself without having to hide or take shelter in another being, object or addiction. Be happy with yourself without seeking the trials of others and learn to be emotionally independent.

You will see in this project the performance of dancer and body artist Guga Paulino, through contemporary dance added movement and meaning to this project.

The scenario represents the artist in his own mind, an infinite space for learning and evolution, entering the phase of LONELINESS and evolving his movements until he reaches SOLITUDE.

*The dancer - Guga Paulino

Brazilian body artist. Works with contemporary dance, theater, yoga and dance for people with disabilities.
