- About -

I specialize in East Asian art history with an emphasis on the arts of Japan. For me, art isn't an object, but a story: the story begins the second that the cultural environment sparks the fire in somebody to make that object, whatever it may be. The narrative then follows the object through the physical and conceptual process of its production, before it follows the object through its successive owners to how it exists in the present day. Art history is a social history, a cultural history, a material history, and a creative history, and weaving those together to create a window into the near and far past is a joy and a passion. As a freelancer, I have worked with multiple cultural and art historically-oriented organizations, both in the US and Japan, in a variety of capacities. Notably, I have worked at the Kyoto National Museum as a translator and research assistant, the Weatherhead East Asian Institute as a digital asset specialist, the KYOTOGRAPHIE international photography festival as a live interpreter, Joan B Mirviss LTD gallery in New York as a research and digital curatorial assistant, and the Cleveland Museum of Art as a Warshawsky Curatorial Fellow. My independent work has been supported by the Oscar Lee Award from Columbia University, the Foreign Language Area Studies grant from the US Department of State, the Japan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Fulbright Commission.
