Exploring the boundaries of gender and gendered expression, these photographs draw on the art of drag and female illusion, combining or conflating them with more traditionally masculine styles. The photographs also allude to queer culture and counterculture, as viewed through a mostly campy mainstream lens, which usually allows for queer representation, but is contrasted here by the minimalist setting and serious atmosphere. The model's direct gaze then challenges the viewer to consider or question their own views of gender and gendered expression, as well as questioning the realities of queer people within this spectrum and within the world of art – a world that often excludes the art of drag for its apparent campiness and ties with popular culture.
