Democracy - A Visual Exploration

Overture Galleries in the Overture Center for the Arts is pleased to announce “DEMOCRACY- A Visual Exploration.” Artists are invited to submit all visual art, including paintings, sculpture and prints as well as performance art and social practice.

All varieties of exploration about democracy are welcome, but Overture will not display artworks that demonize individuals or political parties. A few potential questions for exploration:

• What is the history and definition of democracy?
• How does a democratic political system work?
• What conditions are necessary for democracy to work?
• How well is US and/or world democracy functioning?
• What is the relationship between capitalism and democracy?
• What is the relationship between democracy and freedom?
• How does polarization impact our democracy?
• What is your vision of a healthy democracy?

Exhibit dates: Tuesday, March 7 – Sunday, June 4, 2023

An informational Q&A about the exhibition and open call will be held via Zoom on Thursday, August 11, 2022 from 6-7pm CST.

Open call for a virtual residency: Arts Unchained; For democracy in the arts. is announcing another virtual residency for creative individuals of any backgrounds and/or mediums! Our main purpose at is to find new ways for artists to thrive without having to struggle for survival, by fostering a radically empathetic community of artists and art lovers. This residency is dedicated to the ‘democratization of the arts’, where together with other participants, mentors and team members, the residents will strive to create, imagine and work towards projects that can bring the society closer to the democratization of the arts. 

  • Monetary reimbursement: 200 Eur + 200 Eur worth of KONJ coins.
  • Deadline for submission: September 16th, 00:00 CET 
  • The residency will happen during the month of October 2021, fully online with a weekly commitment of 7-8 hours of contact time.

The residency will include weekly lectures from 4 guest speakers (Michael Mastrototaro, Kalliope Burnia, David Hinojosa Admann, Alexandra Papademetriou), private sessions with a guest mentor and workshops, where you will tackle various problems related to the topic and your project. There  will also be time to bond and connect to the other participants during the weekly side-activities. The main focus will be on developing a personal project that is related to the topic of the democratization of the arts and building a tangible report/article together with the other participants.

At the end of the residency the will host a live event where the six resident individuals can present their completed residency projects. Additionally the residency will culminate in the publication of a residency manifesto/leaflet, that will include essays, notes and material from all individuals participating in the residency (residents, guest speakers, guest mentor, faculty etc.).

The residency will happen online using two platforms: Zoom and Participants are welcome to apply from all around the world. Please keep in mind that the contact time will mostly happen in the evenings in Central European Time. 


  • You are a creative individual of any background (artist, curator, academic, etc.);
  • Each week you are able to present your weekly progress;
  • You are keen and interested to work on the democratization of arts;
  • You show up to the meetings and workshops (total of 7-8 contact hours per week);
  • You are proactive, creative and have a critical mindset;
  • You are a team player;
  • You have access to internet connection strong enough for video calls;

SOSUSPS is a timely & critical public art exhibition in the tradition of mail art. In support of the 245-year-old U.S. Postal Service, SOSUSPS is seeking original mail art from all walks of people from all corners of the world. Anyone can participate by mailing original artwork through the U.S. Postal Service. Collages, shadow boxes, drawings, illustrated poems, paintings, stamp art, wire sculpture, wooden postcards, knitted letters... Interactive collaborations encouraged.  Mail Art received will be posted to the virtual SOSUSPS Gallery upon receipt.
