Gallery Ring announces a contest with the theme CITY.  Artwork depicting the hustle and bustle of city scenes which comprise elements such as skyscrapers, traffic lights, street signs, billboards, shop windows, cars, taxis, buses, bicycles, pedestrians, sidewalks and concrete is eligible.  2D artwork including photography/digital and all artistic styles from realistic to experimental are welcome. Deadline is Sunday, October 18th, 2020.  Many awards are available:  Best In Show (cash prize, free-entry voucher and juror's comments), Diamond Award of Excellence, Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald Awards, Crystal Awards of Merit and others.  All winning artists receive a digital Award Certificate.  Top winners also receive a special Award Page ideal for use in their portfolios and for sharing the news on social media and websites.  All winners and random Finalists will receive exposure and promotion on Gallery Ring's Instagram.  The contest is open to all artists worldwide over 18 years of age, from emerging to established.

New Perspectives in Drawing and Painting Virtual Exhibition

The St. Louis Artists' Guild is calling for artists working in drawing and painting techniques. Over the past 50 years, drawing has been elevated from a supporting role to a primary medium, ranking alongside painting as a central art form. Despite its long history, painting continues to evolve and excite, with new generations taking it in unexpected directions. A central pillar of artistic practice, painting also has an enduring appeal for collectors and still dominates the art market. This exhibition takes the conversation forward, showcasing artists working in drawing and painting media that are bringing contemporary topics, issues, and aesthetics to traditional practices. 

Juror: Justin Henry Miller - Associate Professor and Exhibitions Coordinator at Southeast Missouri State University 

Justin Henry Miller's work emerges from an interest in our inundation of images and the mental layering that occurs as we experience, process, and recall. The elements that compose Miller's paintings are coalescing fragments that teeter between cooperation and individualism. In some instances, the interweaving layers come together to provide a greater clarity, while in others they convolute. Still in some pieces, unique moments ultimately prevail.

Sunday Times Watercolour Competition

THE COMPETITION

Now in its 33rd year, The Sunday Times Watercolour Competition is the largest and most prestigious prize for contemporary watercolour painting in the UK. Hugely popular with artists, gallery visitors, and readers of The Sunday Times, this art prize celebrates the beauty and diversity of water-based painting. For the first time, the Sunday Times Watercolour Competition is going international, and is now open to artists from the UK and around the world. With over £10,000 worth of prizes, a national touring exhibition, and exposure in The Sunday Times, this is an opportunity not to be missed for amateur and professional watercolourists.

THE EXHIBITION

Around 100 watercolours spanning all styles and genres will be selected for the exhibition, which will be on show at the Willis Museum and Sainsbury Gallery, Basingstoke, from October to January 2021, then at Mall Galleries, London, in January 2021. The shortlist and winners will also be announced in The Sunday Times Culture and on The Sunday Times website.

All shortlisted artists will receive a set of Aquafine 24 Half Pans and get a chance to win the following prizes:

  • First Prize – £3,000 and £1,000 of Cass Art gift vouchers for art materials
  • Young Artist Prize – Exhibition opportunity at Cass Art and £500 
  • Second Prize – £1,000, plus a Maimeri Blu Set, worth £695, and Arches Watercolour Paper, worth £750
  • Third Prize – £500, plus a Maimer Blue Set, worth £150, and Aquafine Watercolour Paper, worth £500

ING Discerning Eye 2020

The ING Discerning Eye 2020 is now calling for entries from UK artists!

The exhibition’s new format gives artists the opportunity to showcase their work in a virtual gallery and win a range of prizes - including the ING Purchase Prize worth £5,000 - as well as specific medium and regional awards.

For the first time in its history, this year’s edition of the ING Discerning Eye will be held 100% virtually, helping artists display their work online!

A new online submission process will run until 1 October 2020, making it even easier for artists from across the UK to submit their work and take part.

A virtual gallery will open from 18 November until 31 December 2020 showcasing the artists’ shortlisted works with commentary and introductions by the selectors and a new platform for viewers to buy the artwork directly.
