Eligibility:

We are inviting visual, sound, and performing artists as well as individuals and collectives in other creative disciplines (computer scientists, mechanics, game developers, writers…) that deal with the topic of PLAY to submit their work for the exhibition program of 9th STIFF festival. We are inviting writers and poets who are open to letting their texts come to life activated by animation in space to submit their poems or short texts.

We welcome various perspectives, from social or intimate to conceptual approaches. Submissions are open to visual media, performances, participative works and instructions, digital works (GIF, mem, NFT, computer graphics, 3D objects, video games, websites, applications, video), installations, interactive objects, machines, custom toys, board games, classic games, as well as sound works and textual works that can be interpreted in the exhibition or public space while dealing with the subject of play in the broadest sense.

For the last eight years, the STIFF Festival has produced an extensive supporting program that elaborates and complements the thematic focus of its film program. With the emphasis on contemporary art practices, STIFF’s exhibition program gathers artists from all over the globe, dealing with relevant social, political, and intimate aspects of everyday life.

This year the festival is giving attention to the topic of Play. The exhibition aims to bring together international authors whose works question the meaning of play in contemporary life, use games as a way of communication, or invite the audience to interact with the works.

How do we play while defying the games imposed on us? Who makes the rules? Does the world we live in evoke our playfulness or leave us with a sense of being trapped by the standards it delivers?

In a world where there is a quick way to do almost anything, what are the activities we look for pleasure and where do we take things slow? Are we leaving ourselves the room for mistakes?

How do we build interpersonal relations through play? Games we play as adults perform various functions and address different needs. Do the games we play among our communities establish a space for collaboration or competition?

Whether it focuses on strategic thinking and problem solving or exploration and imagination, playing provides a temporary distance from reality. Which are the places we go to while playing, how long do we stay there, and do we find it hard to come back?

As a supporting festival program, the multimedia exhibition will aim to create a special sensory experience that will explore and enrich the subject of the play.

We invite you to explore the overlapping of art, play and social interaction. We are looking for artworks that activate the visitors and confirm experiencing art as a physical act. The exhibition tends to establish a framework for play to examine our everyday lives.

QUAD’s Season of Play: Play During the Pandemic
Open Call for UK Based Artists
For Exhibition in QUAD Extra Gallery Spaces 2022

Open Call Dates: Opens: Friday 11 March 2022,10am (GMT)
Closes: Sunday 1 May 2022, 23:59 pm (GMT)
Exhibition dates: 23rd July–30th October 2022
Exhibition Launch: 22nd July 2022, 6:30 pm

QUAD’s Season of Play is broad-ranging and will feature artists and works that connect to our sense of play and playfulness across all age ranges. The focus of this Open Call – titled ‘Play During the Pandemic’ will result in artists selected for exhibition in QUAD Extra Gallery Spaces. We are seeking work that pursues a different sense of 'Play' that relates to our daily life, our childhood and specifically how 'Play' has been transformed in the past two years during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Alongside this exhibition, in QUAD’s main Gallery, are two separate exhibitions by artists Seema Mattu and Bruce Asbestos. Mattu and Asbestos, both current QUAD International Digital Fellows, were selected for their work that examines the theme of ‘Play’ in its broadest sense, including notions of playfulness, curiosity, imagination and – most importantly for QUAD and our continuing work – ‘wellbeing’ and participation. The QUAD Extra Gallery spaces Season of Play Open Call will run simultaneously to the main Gallery exhibition and takes as inspiration the same themes.

This Open Call is aimed at UK based artists. We accept proposals of 2D and 3D works, also temporary works that can be directly applied to the gallery walls, plus video and sound works, and interactive works. There is a budget available for artist fees, travel as well as some production costs. QUAD has an extensive list of AV and computing equipment available.

The gallery space is comprised of stairwells, corridors and mezzanine areas - it is a busy, well-used area of this large public building. We welcome applications from individuals and collectives and can offer payment for exhibiting the work. We can cover some production costs, installation and travel. For enquiries, please get in touch with Jodi Kwok - QUAD Assistant Curator.

Please Note:  Artworks must be delivered/ installed between Monday 4th–Friday 15th July 2022.

QUAD is an international centre for engagement in contemporary art and film, based in Derby. The year-round programme focuses on major exhibitions, professional practice for artists, mass participation, commissions, independent film and the creative use of emergent technologies. Eligibility:

STIFF – Student International Film Festival is now calling on all student and debutant filmmakers to submit their films for the 9th festival edition which will take place from 24th to 27th of November 2022 in Rijeka, Croatia.

Works entering the competition program must be original, student-created films or debutant films of all genres: fiction, documentary, animation, and experimental films. All the works need to be up to 60 min in length and completed after the 1st of January 2020.

The films must be in English or with English subtitles and must be submitted via FilmFreeway platform. The deadline for registration and delivery of materials is May 30th, 2022.

STIFF festival accepts films of all genres and themes, however, special attention will be given to the films corresponding to the festival topic which is “Play”. Through this topic, we aim to explore human activities that are not rooted in pragmatism. We are looking at the act of playing as a spontaneous and freeing activity. A world of possibility that has yet its own set of rules.

How much are we allowed to play in our everyday lives and who writes the rules? What are the games we play as adults – do they restrain or liberate us? Do we go around the rules as we make love, films, and as we make new encounters? What do these creations say about us? Our wish is to reaffirm the seriousness of play as a tool for learning about ourselves and the world, simultaneously prioritizing creativity and pleasure.

Prizes Details:

The festival jury will award Best Fiction Film, Best Documentary, and Best Animated Film while our audiences will award one film of their choice. Special mentions might be given to the outstanding talents from the fields of directing, production, acting, screenwriting, cinematography, editing, production design, sound design and score composing.

Calling all playwrights! It's your chance to submit to the 2022 Veterans' 10 Minute Playwrighting Contest at Salem State University. Deadline to apply is April 30- learn more about the requirements here: https://bit.ly/3foZkmb

Designated a Military Friendly School by G.I. Jobs, a Top College and University by Military Advanced Education, and a Best for Vets College by Military Times, Salem State values our military connected students and their families and the sacrifices they have made for our country. Salem State is committed to supporting Veterans’ voices on and off campus. The arts create unique and powerful opportunities for individuals and groups to share experiences and constructive dialogue. As such, Salem State is proud to announce its third annual Veterans Playwriting contest which will culminate in staged readings of selected plays in November 2022.

All playwrights, regardless of military affiliation, are invited to enter Salem State University’s 10-Minute Playwriting Contest. However, preference will be given to those with a direct military connection. This includes active-duty military, reservists, National Guard, Veterans, and direct family of any of these.

The theme of the play should directly touch on military service and/or how military service affects a community. The contest and festival look to recognize and celebrate those that have served and currently serve. We are looking to bring together a variety of voices exploring both the challenges and the victories and positive influences that Veterans have on our community.

Judges will select finalists, whose plays will be part of a series of staged readings in November 2021. Our first annual festival was held in the Callan Studio Theatre at SSU in September 2019. This three-night festival was a huge success with eight staged plays, 4 professional directors, 20 professional and student actors, packed audiences, and vibrant community conversations. Our second annual festival was held virtually during the 10 days leading up to Veterans day 2020 with one play released each day culminating in a community zoom conversation with the playwrights, actors, and directors.
