CORONA VIRUS ARTISTIC RESPONSE INTERNATIONAL ONLINE COLLABORATIVE RESIDENCY

WHAT IS IT

The extremely long, yet informative, title really says it all; UPROCK is producing and curating a collective of professional, international artists of all mediums to artistically respond to the global pandemic we are experiencing. We believe this is a unique moment in our history to create a piece of work that documents the human and artistic experience specific to this crisis. The final work will be a strategic tapestry of macro and micro-collaborations between artists of different fields and locations.

It’s a group of artists from around the world joining forces to create something through the unprecedented space we will be operating in over the next few months. It is meant to be a time capsule of collaborative work that explores aspects of the current human experience; emotional responses (sadness, anger, fear, hope, joy), thoughts towards a sustainable post-crisis future, the access and utilization of technology, opinions of our governments, the depression of isolation, humanity as one organism, life and death itself, spiritual and religious responses; the possibilities are endless. This will be a work that we created during a time of isolation and disease so that those present may be moved through our work and that those in the future will be able to understand how the international artistic community felt during this time.

WHY IS IT HAPPENING?

The Corona Virus Pandemic has yet again revealed the unifying, healing and hopeful effects that the arts have on ourselves personally and on our societies. While quarantined, people have returned to old creative passions to distract from the stress of the news cycle; others have only begun experimenting with the arts to keep their spirits alive during isolation. Neighborhoods and entire countries have turned to music and singing to unify in a rallying voice of comfort and hope.

Our goal is to allow artists, specifically those in quarantine or isolation, the opportunity to network, socialize, collaborate and create.

WHO IS IT FOR?

This is an online residency designed for mid-career or higher, professional artists. We use the term “artist” very liberally; musicians to architects, magicians to potters, painters to animators, drag queens to editors, engineers to screenwriters, DJs to poets, dance crews to chefs, fashion designers to poets; all creatives are welcome to apply. If the idea of remotely collaborating with international artists of different fields excites you, then this is for you! Many professional artists are finding that for the first time in a long time, they don’t have anything to work on. Others are eager to create to take their mind off of things. Many are isolated and/or in quarantine. This really allows us a unique opportunity to create an extremely high-caliber, collaborative work.

Applicants must be 18 years of age or older. As the nature of the program relies on collaboration, this is for artists who are self-motivated and can be relied upon to communicate and respect deadlines. We will need everyone supporting the participants, the program and the project!

If you are an amateur artist, or under the age of 18, you can submit your work of any medium to be displayed in our CORONA VIRUS ARTISTIC RESPONSE GALLERY.

WHERE IS IT HAPPENING?

You are creating from wherever you are living out this “new normal”. Your collaborators are from anywhere in the world. We are directing the residency from New York, USA.

We will be using Zoom to teleconference. We are still researching the best options available for remote collaboration file sharing. Both services will be generally accessible and free to use.

The final work will premiere on YouTube.

HOW WILL IT WORK?

Due to the urgency of this project’s timeframe, we are planning to move as quickly as possible through the application and initial brainstorming process.

Applications AND portfolios must be received by March 31st at 6PM Eastern Standard Time, in order to be considered.

All applicants will be notified of their acceptance status on April 1st. Selected participants will receive a questionnaire, breakdown of the remote brainstorming process and information on how to connect to the teleconference. We will try our best to coordinate any teleconferences with everyone.

Throughout April and May, the magic will happen. Artists from across the globe will be remotely micro-collaborating; crafting and creating elements of the larger work. We will be guiding, mentoring and orchestrating the macro and micro-collaborations; making sure we are progressing with a clear focus, objective and quality. We will organize weekly teleconferences where the team can update itself and share the progress of their work.

Participants will have the ability to decide how many micro-collaborations they would like to be a part of.

We are anticipating the length of the residency to be between 2 and 3 months. A clear timeline will be discussed amongst the team and agreed upon.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR PARTICIPATION?

Participants must be 18 years of age or older.

The residency will operate primarily in English but it is 2020; we have technology available that should make communicating a non-issue.

There is no application fee. There is also no support available at this time to assist artists with materials. We will mostly be creating with the materials and tools we already have. Should funding become available, UPROCK will be transparent about what has been received and, although maintaining final decisions, will caucus with the participants as to how it should be shared based on who needs resources.

Participants must adhere to the laws and recommendations of their localities, countries and of the World Health Organization. We want to create responsibly, in a manner that has no negative impact on the pandemic.

All work must be original. Artists must own all rights to all elements of their contributions (for example, if samples are used in music production or stock footage in video production, you must own the rights and have the ability to freely use them). Artists are contributing their work, and it’s use, for public exhibition. For more information on how UPROCK protects participants ownership and rights, check out our FAQ Section.

We would like participants to document parts of their process and their journey through the pandemic as this documentation could serve as an element of the actual work or even stand alone as an independent project.

Participants are expected to honor the deadlines that they create with their team/s and commit to seeing out the project to completion.

We are looking for applicants who get this idea and are excited about it! We want the team to be compiled of creatives who are eager and innovative in their collaborations and want to challenge themselves. We need a team of people who can brainstorm and think in outrageous ways.

We want you to be you. Specifically and uniquely you. If talk in very simple and abstract ways, then talk in simple and abstract ways! If you have an extremely intellectual approach to your work, then get intellectual!

WHO IS PARTICIPATING?

Hopefully, you! We are anticipating a group of interesting, creative, confident, bold and innovative artists to join our Director and Guest Artist! We will be adding more Guest Artists to the roster as they sign on.
