Hello there!

We are RAUM. A public exhibition square in Utrecht of more than 40,000 m2: Berlijnplein. We use the power of art and design to involve people in the living, growing city. With makers and audiences we are building a program of installations and events that pique our curiosity. Together we look for new insights for a multifaceted and multicolored city through cultural experiment. In our view, that’s indispensable for the soul of the city.

Our maker-in-residency program gives you, as a maker, the space to represent your vision of that living city, in a grand work in a public space (after all, RAUM is a square). Pretty cool, right? Read on then!



Interaction between people and their environment is of vital essence for a living, bustling city. In 2030, 70% of the world’s population will live in cities. In short term, Utrecht will grow to 400,000 inhabitants. RAUM is a place between the old and the new: our square is located in the geographical heart of Utrecht on top of the remnants of the Roman Empire, but surrounded by freshly baked clinkers and freshly paved asphalt. To our right is the historic city center, to our left the largest new residential area in the Netherlands: Leidsche Rijn. Nowhere is the contrast between the old and the new world bigger: that’s why we’ve chosen Berlijnplein as our location.

A living city is a meeting point where work, money, culture and recreation intersect. This offers opportunities to shape the future together. To come up with solutions for the challenges of our time. And that’s always been about people, and how we relate to buildings, infrastructure, living space and workspace. And especially, to each other. The city is a source of knowledge, expertise, creativity and resources. To unlock that source, you have to stimulate interaction between people and the environment. With RAUM, we do that through cultural experiment, and that yields new insights. RAUM gives the city its soul: it is a place where stories are made and told. Where art and design visualize the challenges of our city. A place that gives shape to the solidarity of the inhabitants with their city.

So, makers – we need you!



In 2018, we have sufficient room for another two to three makers. In 2017 we made a start with our first makers-in-residency where, among others, visual artist Leonard van Munster and food designer Chloé Rutzerveld were selected. In 2018 we will work with Overtreders W, Studio RNDR (formerly LUSTlab), Sacha van den Haak & Anton Lamberg and Elmo Vermijs & Richard Vijgen.

What do we offer you?

A workplace (Utrecht makers) or residential workplace (national and international makers) for up to three months in the Makershuis of RAUM.

A stipend of € 300 (self-employed) or € 400 (collective) per week if you are at least two days a week in residence (read: in the Makershuis). This stipend is intended for subsistence, like for instance groceries, travel costs from home and from the Makershuis to suppliers or appointments, and so on. For example: if you work on your project for a total of four weeks in the Makershuis, you will receive € 1200 as a freelancer or € 1600 as a collective. If you work at home, you will not receive a stipend.

A fee of up to 20% (ex VAT) within your total budget.

An open area of ​​40,000 m2 where your work and projects you create and produce in this period can be exhibited. On the grounds of RAUM (around the Makershuis) or on the Berlin square. Note: RAUM is a public space and therefore always open!

A reimbursement of material and production costs of the work you create, produce and / or organize up to € 40,000, excluding VAT.

A (shared) workshop where you can use tools, machines and equipment at a low renting price.

An involved RAUM crew, assistance with production, critical reflection in the research process, events and activities that you can play a role in. And finally, a large network of key figures in the city and environment who like to give input and help (residents, local cultural institutions, etc.) ).

Publicity (press promotion, social media, etc.).



Makers! Visual artists, architects, designers, social designers… What matters most: You got to have guts. In other words, you are brave enough to experiment and follow a vision when it comes to your work and the living city. People who see your work leave with a new or different perspective. But more importantly, everyone contributes to the city. And so we find it very important that other people can find their own ‘experience’ in your process or work. Whether you’re encouraging encounters, letting the audience experience something, transferring your skills or letting people literally build together … only with each other can we make room for everyone. So the audience plays a very important role during your residency.

As a maker, you move on the cutting edge of art and design, for example, in the following areas: architecture, visual art, interactive design, audiovisual media, social design, new media (virtual reality, gaming, etc.).

You create one or more, (temporary) installations in the public space.

The public can ‘experience’ in your process or result. In other words: you create a work and / or a project that is interactive, educational or functional in nature in the process or result. The public can think along, help build, participate or experience.



We ask you to submit a short and concise (provisional) plan, so that we can make a qualitative selection. The plan must contain at least the following information (maximum of 5 A4 exclusive portfolio):

General information: name, address, telephone number, e-mail address, website, date of birth, nationality, current place of residence, Chamber of Commerce number, VAT number and if it is a group registration, the number of persons.

If you want to register as a producer duo or makers collective, clearly state this in your project proposal (including the number of people).

Statement (max. 200 words): a short description of what you as a maker stand for and what affects you when it comes to the living city and / or the challenges of our time in cities.

Plan description (max 600 words): a description of the concept and a vision of the role of the audience in your work or project.

One or more sketch (s) with (rough) dimensions, including a view sketch and the ideal position of the work at RAUM or on the Berlijnplein.

A time schedule (including the duration of the research phase, the duration of the realization phase, completion and dismantling and completion of the project – also state which period is best for you in 2018).

A budget of the total costs excl. VAT (fee of up to 20% on the total budget, an unforeseen item of 2%, material, production, transport, removal of work and possible labor costs of outsiders and any travel expenses included) for the work (in total for a maximum of € 40,000 excl. VAT). This exclusive stipend is a € 300 (freelancer) or € 400 (collective) per week in the Makershuis (stipend is calculated after the selection procedure).

Appendix: a portfolio of previously created and conceived work from 2012 – now (or at most 5 years ago).

The maker statement and the description of the plan may also be submitted in a video. That would be very nice even!


Via the link at the bottom of this form you can indicate whether you want to participate in the open call. The selected creators receive a fee of € 250 for submitting a complete (!) Plan on 18 February.

The project proposal is assessed by an artistic advisory team, pioneers and experts in urban development, design and art, consisting of: Joop de Boer (Pop-Up City), Xandra van der Eijk (I Wait Here) and Daniëlle Arets (Design Academy).

There is no (written) correspondence about the outcome, quality and / or evaluation of the submitted plans for the open call, except in the case of the participants whose work has been selected.

The selected participants will be approached to develop and produce their ideas and design proposals; you agree to further develop and complete your plan in accordance with the advice and feedback from the organizing party.

The submitted plans remain the intellectual property of the participant.

DCAD names Sandra K. James of DuPont to its Board of Trustees



Sandra Kingsberry James of DuPont has been elected to the Delaware College of Art and Design Board of Trustees. She will serve a term through Jan. 30, 2020.

“Sandra brings 20 years of corporate experience to our board,” said trustee chairman Thomas J. Shopa. “We are delighted to have her expertise in reputation management and communications to support our strategic direction.”

James currently serves as Corporate Communications and Global Public Affairs Manager at DuPont, where she has had responsibility for corporate media relations through the historic $150 billion merger with Dow. Previously, James led global public affairs for one of the company’s businesses and its iconic brands, including Kevlar®, Nomex® and Tyvek®. In that role, she was responsible for integrated marketing activities, media relations, issues and crisis communications, and thought leadership.

For six years, James was principal in her own public affairs consultancy. She served clients in both the corporate and non-profit arenas, drawing on nearly a decade of experience in leading global public affairs groups in the pharmaceutical industry.

James holds a bachelor of arts degree in marketing communications from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and also studied communications at Syracuse University. In addition to her role with DCAD, she has served as an advisory board member for the Brandywine Valley National Scenic Byway. The Philadelphia native resides in Delaware with her husband and two children.

James joins DCAD at an exciting time as the College celebrates its 20th anniversary and anticipates naming its next president in early 2018. A committee of trustees, staff and community members is working with a search firm to identify finalists for the position.

Winter Designer Maker Fair



The Winter Designer Maker Fair is Kingsgate Workshops’ annual festive craft and design sale.

This year a selection of contemporary craft makers and designers, producing everything from high-end ceramics to paper sculpture, will be selling their work from a new outdoor market and in curated indoor shop spaces in our Victorian warehouse building. Unique and precious gifts, decorations, and wrapping paper will all nestle together on our fairylit market stalls.
We’ll also have festive food and a chance to peek inside the building and its beautiful yard, which are both usually closed to the public.

Beautiful new outdoor space
Celebrate the launch of our new revamped yard space – our beautiful garden is now twice the size, covered in twinkling lights, warmed by roaring fires in our patio heaters, and scented with woodsmoke and gingerbread spice.

Enjoy festive gourmet treats 
The gingerbread scent we mentioned will be emanating from The Lounge Cafe's beautiful pop up kitchen, overflowing with lebkuchen and mulled wine. If you fancy something to take home to save for later, we'll have stalls full of festive treats ready wrapped for presents too!

Explore the historic Victorian warehouse
Visitors can head inside the building for a Christmas grotto for grownups, showcasing the objects made by studio holders in festive displays, and to see inside a selection of studios to get more insight into the making of the ceramics, jewellery and painting on display.

Chisato Tamabayashi's beautiful paper installations will cast enchanting shadows on the pavements outside.

Who are Kingsgate Workshops?
Kingsgate Workshops started life as an artists’ squat in the 70’s, and has blossomed into a charity which celebrates and supports the creative work of over 75 artists designers and makers who work in the building, and many more who take part in our artist residencies and shows.

For most of the year, the main building is closed to the public, and only our corrugated shed Project Space in the yard runs regular exhibitions, talks and screenings.

Just twice a year we showcase the beautiful pieces made by our studio holders, giving you a glimpse into our somewhat rickety, higgledy piggledy 3 floor warehouse.

The Malamegi company is raffling the creation of a new collection of works by the selection of one artist among the 12 finalists of the contest.

The contest is aimed at promoting the artists participating in it, giving them the opportunity to become involved effectively in the market of art and decoration.
