DCAD showing ‘forged fashion’ of sculptor, blacksmith Ellen Durkan

Delicate yet dangerous and evoking both strength and vulnerability, the wearable metalwork of two-time state arts fellowship recipient Ellen Durkan is creating a striking presence in Delaware College of Art and Design’s Toni & Stuart B. Young Gallery.

“Ellen Durkan: Behind Her Iron Gates” opens at DCAD with an Art Loop Wilmington reception featuring live models from 5 to 8 p.m. February 1. Complementing the “forged fashion” pieces are graphite and charcoal drawings in a range of sizes.

“The drawings influence the metalwork, and the metalwork influences the drawings,” notes Durkan, who is the first DCAD graduate and faculty member to present a solo show in the institution’s main gallery. “I use jewelry, leather and blacksmithing techniques to transform my drawings into my three-dimensional reality.”

Durkan, a Wilmington native, graduated from DCAD with an associate of fine arts degree in 2004 and went on to earn a bachelor of fine arts degree from The Corcoran College of Art + Design and a master of fine arts degree from Towson University. She also completed a blacksmith assistantship at Peters Valley School of Craft. The Delaware Division of the Arts awarded her an Emerging Artist Fellowship in 2011 and an Established Professional Fellowship in 2018.

The self-labeled “artist craftsperson” owns and operates Iron Maiden Forge and has taught sculpture, three-dimensional design and drawing at DCAD for nearly a decade. She spends summers traveling to instruct blacksmithing classes all over the United States as well as in South America.

Durkan has shown her pieces in more than 40 shows, including a recent exhibition at the Delaware Art Museum. She also has mounted more than a dozen runway presentations of her work, as far away as France and Australia and as close by as The Queen and The Delaware Contemporary here in Wilmington.

“The pieces I create challenge my craftsmanship while constantly posing difficult psychological questions,” she says. “To make a material known for its strength soft enough to be re-shaped is powerful. The work confronts issues with trust, vulnerability and power, as well as the dichotomy of letting go and opening up at the same time.”

A closing reception for “Ellen Durkan: Behind Her Iron Gates” will be held in conjunction with Art Loop Wilmington from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 1, and feature a presentation by Durkan. The show will conclude on Friday, March 8. Gallery hours from February 2 to 28 and from March 2 to 8 will be 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

Also opening with a reception from 5 to 8 p.m. February 1 will be “Free Form,” an exhibition of pieces created and curated by DCAD students, many of whom have studied under Durkan. This show will complement “Behind Her Iron Gates” as it focuses on works depicting the human head and figure. After opening in the Tatiana Copeland Student Center Gallery, located in DCAD’s Saville Residence Hall at Sixth and Market streets, “Free Form” will be on view there by appointment through February 21.

Admission to both shows is free and open to the public, and most of the work is for sale.

Anastasiia Ivanova debutes new Look Book

Fashion Designer Anastasiia Ivanova unveils the look book for her forthcoming Spring/Summer 16 line.

Anastasiia’s designs don’t lurch from trend to trend. She always manages to make an impact with her creations. She creates only dresses and helps women discover the world of beauty.

With the dream-like background, the clothes almost appear to be the focus of the look book. Featuring little-to-no-makeup, and slicked-back hair, models stare directly into the lens, showcasing Anastasiia's new chic, minimal tailoring for the next season.

The collection takes a fresh look at classic staples and features lots of brilliant tones, including pink, blue, black and white.  This is complete in a tender feminine palette, yet the innocent colors are provocatively contrasting the bold cuts and designs. A feeling of absolute airiness incarnates in the flowy midi viscose dress of sky color.

For her collection, she used wonderful fabric combinations of silk, jacquard, and сhiffon.

This season’s look book was inspired by nature. “Nature is the best pierian spring” – designer says.

Recently Anastasiia presented S/S 16 collection at the Summer Fashion Show in Los Angeles. And will appear it at the Ukrainian Fashion Week on October 19th.

And obviously the look book is amazing. Let's take a closer look at the in the dresses&coats by Anastasiia Ivanova.
