Derivatives, Reflection, Homage with Roisin Tierney

This course will look at poems that borrow from or allude to other poems. Homage, reflection, acknowledgement. We will meet fortnightly over ten weeks to look at how past and present poets have responded to and been inspired by each others work. Participants will be encouraged to share their own poems written in response to, or inspired by, the work covered in class. Workshopping and critical discussion will be conducted in a wholly friendly and constructive atmosphere. 5 fortnightly sessions on Thursdays, 6:45pm 8:45pm, starting 16 February.

The Poetry of the Sacred with Karen McCarthy Woolf

Auden wrote that the centre I cannot find is known to my unconscious mind. In todays increasingly complex and often urban environment, what is sacred to us as individuals? And how does poetry reach towards a new understanding of the unknown, whether through religiosity, nature or science? Students will be encouraged to generate new work as we explore these issues through close reading of contemporary poets such as Louise Glck, Maitreyabandhu, Daljit Nagra, Alice Oswald, Rowan Ricardo Philips, Adlia Prado and R.A. Villanueva. 5 fortnightly sessions on Thursdays, 6:45pm 8:45pm, starting 9 February.
