Open call for video works - Common(ing) Thread

Eligibility:

First Cut (The Hague, NL) and The New Flesh (London, UK) have joined forces to curate an online screening series: ‘Common(ing) Thread’.

We have found a common ground in facilitating new questions surrounding the intersections between body, costume and society. We believe that subversive costume can expose and challenge the conventions of body politics. How is the (costumed) body recognised, understood and regulated?

We call for experimental video works from artists based in the UK or the Netherlands that engage with the politics of costume, or how costuming practices can be read as a political act. Artists will be paired and invited to engage in a dialogue with one another that will be published alongside the screenings.

Deadline: Friday 4th February 2022, midnight (CEST).

 

About us

The New Flesh

The New Flesh is an artist residency and platform to support early career moving image artists who employ experimental use of costume in their work. By facilitating a residency within Academy Costumes, one of the UK’s leading costumiers for stage and screen, The New Flesh offers artists the chance to explore the transgressive, revolutionary and radical nature of costume both historically and in society today.

The New Flesh was founded by Georgie Brinkman, and works in partnership with LUX and Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival, with financial support from Arts Council England.

 

First Cut

First Cut is a platform for screenings and conversations around independent/radical/experimental films by emerging artists based in The Hague. First Cut calls for transformative films that stem from socio-political inquiries.

While The Hague is internationally branded as the city of Peace and Justice, First Cut welcomes audio-visual practices that question and expand this premise. First Cut aims to host artistic interventions and radical responses to our international society and its politics, bridging emerging artists and local communities in The Hague.

First Cut invites perspectives from multiple modes of production and backgrounds with which to read our political contexts and reshape a collective imagination. We especially encourage filmmakers with decolonial, feminist, queer and nonnormative perspectives to submit their films.

First Cut is founded by Cristina Lavosi, Hattie Wade, and Cyan Bae.

 

Screening Fees

At this stage, we offer a symbolic screening fee of €35/£30. We are searching for funding, and will update on this page if the fee manages to increase! As artists, we asked ourselves what a beneficial exchange would be, and we hope that we can offer the beginning of a new artistic relationship between individuals in the Netherlands and the UK.

THE ARTISTS FORUM PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION, part of our juried arts programming, is open to photographers of all levels seeking to gain exposure in the New York City and international arts and media market.

Its mission is to provide an accessible platform for photographers to present their best work for juried selection, increase artist communication and business contacts, provide career advancement opportunities, and publicly award talented artists.

Our 2021 Competition Theme: (THE) POLITICS OF EMOTION

THE ARTISTS FORUM invites artists to showcase interpretations for the phrase: The Politics of Emotion.

‘Politics’ is not necessarily defined in terms of government, policy, or voting, but in this case has a broader meaning — the navigation of the politics inherent within interpersonal relationships and its emotional impact. This idea can be applied to external circumstances within any personal, societal, national, or international scenario.

Each submission, reviewed by a panel of industry professionals, will be rated upon its individual merits. Finalists in each category will be judged against one another and a winner declared.

Award recognition for each category will be given at a live ceremony in New York City, alongside special presentations and performers. In the case of COVID-19 restrictions, our award ceremony will be conducted online and then televised on Manhattan cable stations shortly thereafter.

All festival finalists will be video profiled and promoted on our online platforms.

Winners are eligible for a formal studio or Zoom interview with host to be promoted via THE ARTISTS FORUM: AFTV -- a 20+ year arts based television program broadcasted from mid-town Manhattan in New York City.

Our Grand Prize winner will be presented with an opportunity for mentorship sessions with a prominent photography industry professional.

Social Justice Collage Workshop

A four-week, virtual/online workshop in March & April 2021 with Kolaj Institute

Collage artists with a passion for equal rights and equitable opportunities for all are invited to apply for Kolaj Institute’s Social Justice Collage Workshop, a four-week program designed to provide a foundation for the intersection of collage and social justice with the end result of creating a collage for an exhibition in May.

Early social justice advocates focused on issues such as the distribution of capital, property, and wealth because of the extreme disparity between the rich and the poor at the time. Since then, the term social justice has adapted to include the environment, race, gender, and other causes and manifestations of inequality with a focus on human rights and improving the lives of disadvantaged and marginalized groups.

The workshop is designed to explore the purpose, meaning, context, history and problems of social justice through collage making, discussion, examination of other artists’ work, and hearing from dynamic speakers who make and curate social justice collage. Participants will engage with each other via Slack and meet once a week on Zoom for four weeks. The workshop faculty is Elaine Tassy, Gerald Leavell, Rachel Monique Walker, and G.E. Vogt.

Elaine Tassy sees social justice collage-making “as a way to participate in the cry for justice for victims in some small way, and to process my feelings around their victimization at the same time.” During the workshop, she will speak about her experience making social justice collage and present, Say Their Names, an interactive art experience that documents and reimagines the police killings of Black people. She will invite participants to contribute to this project by creating context for one of the figures.

Gerald Leavell writes, “Social justice, to me, begins with self-reflection. Honest, brave, and compassionate self-reflection.” Gerald Leavell will speak about artists who are currently using collage to make an impact and lead a collage making session.

For Rachel Monique Walker, social justice is “a form of living justice, where action is taken to counter oppressions and restore rightful respect to people who are dehumanized by our systems.” Walker’s vision board exercise will give participants a chance to reflect on their previous engagement with the idea of social justice, consider where they are headed with social justice in the future, and make a collage in response to these insights.

G.E. Vogt will lead a presentation of their own voyage of learning about the history of political collage. They write, “Art is one of the most powerful forms of expressing, or bringing attention to the different forms of social inequality, thereby acting as a catalyst to motivate the necessary work for social justice.”

Artists in the workshop will work alongside each other to conceptualize, contextualize, and create social justice-themed collages. At the end of the workshop, everyone will be invited to have one of their collages included in the May 2021 exhibition at the Albuquerque Center for Peace and Justice along with Elaine Tassy’s piece, Say Their Names.

WHO IS THIS FOR?

The workshop is intended for self-motivated artists, at any stage in their career, who want to develop a practice of making artwork in response to social injustice. The workshop focuses on creating collage that addresses modern issues and current political concerns. The workshop is open to artists anywhere in the world.

WORKSHOP LOGISTICS

Dates: March 18th to April 14th

Participants will engage via an online platform through group discussions. A two-hour virtual meeting will be held on each Saturday from 2-4PM EST.

COST

The cost of the Social Justice Collage Workshop is $350; however, no artist will be turned away for lack of funds and the organizers will work with artists to build a financial aid package. The Social Justice Collage Workshop is limited to 12 artists.

APPLICATION PROCESS

The submission process will ask you for: Contact information; Artist Bio (50-250 words); Artist Statement of Practice (50-300 words); 5-7 images of artwork; a statement of expectations; and ask you some questions about your work and financial needs. Applications are reviewed by the faculty. Space is extremely limited; however, the applications of qualified artists are kept on file and those artists will be invited to future workshops, if they wish.

2018 - It's Political

It's Political – A Group Exhibition

 

Though often divisive and inflammatory, we can't avoid politics in today's world. The intrinsic beliefs and opinions that shape us as human beings can almost always be seen in a political light.

For our show this month, we seek pieces that express all things political, regardless of party or belief systems. The artwork may be literal of a politician or political issue or opinion, or it may be figurative and interpretive. It's political, but we value all beliefs and the manner in which these can be expressed, artistically.

Las Laguna Gallery is now accepting submissions of artwork inspired by anything the artist considers 'political'. There are no restrictions on content, style, medium or context, but your entries should fit this theme, either traditionally or digitally, in some way.

We invite and encourage artists of ALL ages to participate and look forward to seeing the creativity of your work. All local, national, and international artists, professional and amateur, are encouraged to submit their works for this art exhibition.

Acceptable sizes:  We do not have a limitation on size of works submitted but have found pieces over 48" to be costly for shipping and recommend manageably sized pieces.
