Linenhall International Artist Residency 2022

The Linenhall International Artist Residency will support an artist in the creation of new work and/or the development of their artistic practice. The aim of the Linenhall International Artist Residency is to invite an artist not living in Ireland to experience life and culture in the West of Ireland. The Linenhall will facilitate events for the visiting artist and local artists and communities to meet and engage with one another. We see this as an opportunity for engagement across a broad context – to share ideas, to understand different approaches to and perspectives on their art form, to liaise with others and gain a broad range of experiences that will benefit their artistic practice. We hope the visiting artist will complete the residency with new experiences, ideas and inspirations based on their time in Mayo and will have made lasting connections to the artist community in Mayo.

The residency will take place in Autumn 2022 over eight weeks, with both an on-site and off-site element. The initial two weeks of the residency will be Preparation Weeks when the artist will be paid a fee for research and development of a residency plan before traveling to Castlebar. The artist will then have full on-site access to The Linenhall artist studio and accommodation for six weeks from Tuesday 20th September to 30th October.

During the residency artists will be expected to have a clear plan to develop new work or relevant research. Resident artists are expected to work, research or create from the studio space or offsite for at least 20 hours a week. We hope the resident artist will be willing to hold open studio hours or be available for some other form of engagement with the community for a minimum of a half day per week. This engagement could be an open invitation to the community as a whole, or be an invitation to local artists, or other formal or informal groups within our community. Public engagement could take the form of artist talks, workshops, demonstrations, skills sharing, visiting with community groups or other events.

As we can only offer one residency to one international artist in 2022, we need to select very carefully. We have decided to limit the opportunity to highly experienced artists who will be able to share their knowledge with local artists and the community.

Who can apply?

  • Highly experienced professional visual artists aged over 18
  • Artists who can clearly indicate why they want to come for a residency in Ireland

  • Artists working in any medium including but not limited to: sculpture; photography; painting; installation; socially engaged practice; digital media, video.
  • Artists working individually or as the lead artist with a collaborator (application will be assessed for the lead artist only)

AiR Carpintarias / FLAD 2022

The AiR Carpintarias / FLAD 2022 is a three-month artist residency, directed to individual artists or artist duos in Fine Arts. FLAD Luso-American Development Foundation supports this artistic residency.

AiR Carpintarias / FLAD 2022 is intended for North-American artists not residing in Portugal or Portuguese-Americans.

The AiR offers a monthly artist fee plus flight costs; an apartment for the artist is also provided for.

CSL - Carpintarias de São Lázaro is a contemporary cultural center where creativity, innovation and multidisciplinary intersect giving an opportunity to bring people, communities and knowledge together.

CSL opened in 2017 with a multidisciplinary and transversal programming. From dance shows and classical and electronic music concerts to architecture congresses, it was also the exhibitions with Los Carpinteros, Alfredo Jaar, Jorge Molder, Marina Abramovic, Per Barclay and Miles Greenberg (performance) that have marked this cultural space in the city of Lisbon.

Located in the historical center of the Portuguese capital, between Martim Moniz Square and Campo dos Mártires da Pátria, its goal is to generate new possibilities of creation and performance and also the reception and development of relevant artistic skills, supporting traditional and contemporary cultural production.

This program is organized by the Visual Arts department of CSL and will be held inside the Cultural Center, in a close relationship with the immediate neighborhood, the city and the local artistic community.

CSL is located in the historic center of the city, in a particular area, very marked by the great variety of cultural communities that gather around the Martim Moniz Square. The last time City Hall did a survey, besides Portuguese residents, more than 100 different cultural ethnicities lived in this part of town (the main ones being from Africa, Bangladesh, China, India and Pakistan; but people from Brazil, Ukraine, Nepal and Russia also live here) and, more recently, with the urban rehabilitation process of this area, new communities have settled like French, Americans and Italians, among others. All these communities are very different at first sight, but many of them have common characteristics such as their dedication to work, usually in retail, and their lifestyle being very attached to their cultural traditions of origin and perhaps a bit disconnected to the local contemporary context.

The goal of AiR Carpintarias / FLAD 2022 is to challenge the artists to create strategies on how to bring people from the surrounding communities to engage in the cultural space of contemporary creation of CSL. The leitmotif is the idea of and reflection on the concept of community. What is 'community' and how is it built; how can we build 'community' through contemporary art?

A reflection that may lead to an integration of the cultural differences of the neighboring communities, through contemporary creation, and that establishes approaches in which tradition does not prevent the creation of new shared cultural contexts and favors the sharing of contents and the creation of new common perceptions.

In the aforementioned sense, we invite artists to submit proposals for AiR Carpintarias / FLAD 2022 suggesting a strategy for concrete interactions with the populations neighboring the cultural center, which may have various formats: workshops, meetings to be recorded in the space, a joint project with members of these communities and, ideally, in its final presentation also in the presence and with the participation of these people.

Fact check:

3-month residency + time for final presentation

Monthly fee of 400 € per artist / artist duo + apartment

Travel charges with flight (return ticket) are paid for by Carpintarias de São Lázaro.

For more information, please consult our Opencall Application Rules for the AiR Carpintarias / FLAD 2022 on our website.
