State of the Art is a monthly showcase that brings fine art to an accessible level and features a diverse group of artists, collectives, and galleries, hosted by Geodesic Designs. Shows are held throughout the year as "pop-up" gallery events to provide opportunities for local, regional, and national artists to exhibit and sell their works in downtown Chicago. We also partner with local businesses, as part of our Art Subscription Service, to exhibit art throughout their space and offices on a 3-month rotational basis.

We are looking for artists to apply to participate in our Pop-Up Shows and Art Subscription Service!

- Please review our Artists Facts page prior to applying. https://sotachicago.com/faq/

- We ask that you provide as much information as possible about yourself and your art so we can get a feel for the work you do. Please use the comments box to describe your work to us.

- Space is limited and fills up fast so please be sure to indicate all months you are available to participate.

- The fee to apply is a non-refundable $40. This helps to cover our costs and administrative fees.

Please note that if you get into the show, we do not charge a booth fee. After you have submitted your information, you will need to pay your application fee through PayPal with the link provided.

- We will be in touch if we have any additional questions and if you were chosen for one of the listed SOTA show dates.

Solo, Group and/or Curated Shows

ARC Gallery and Educational Foundation is a non-profit, woman-run cooperative gallery that provides alternative space exhibition opportunities for innovative artists outside the commercial gallery system. Since1973 ARC has given exposure and support to artists, providing an atmosphere for the continued development of artistic potential and experimentation. ARC Gallery’s Exhibitions Committee reviews all media including video, film, installation and performance. We prefer to see a body of related work that would be the basis of an exhibition at our gallery.

ARC encourages submissions and proposals for solo exhibitions, group shows and curated shows.

ARC is run entirely by its women artist members; as a non-profit exhibition space. ARC receives some support from outside funding sources but not enough to cover our operating expenses. To provide the space and services we offer to exhibiting artists, we defray our expenses by charging exhibition fees. Each of the rental spaces in the gallery actually costs twice as much as we charge the artists. The members of the gallery and the Educational Foundation subsidize each of the spaces by an additional $750.00 each month.

Included in the rental fee:

Sale of Work: ARC does not take commission for work sold, but instead acts as a liaison for sales.

Installation: Professional installation and de-installation of your show by ARC Gallery’s crew according to gallery guidelines (exceptions: artist’s site-specific installation).

Documentation: Shows are documented on ARC Gallery’s website with the image, title and statement sent by the artist along with their website link. ARC digitally documents each show and retains the images for our gallery archives. It will then be archived, along with all of ARC Gallery’s 35 years of documentation, in the Ryerson Library of the Art Institute of Chicago for future scholarly research.

Gallery Hours and Opening Reception: ARC members staff the gallery Wednesday through Saturday from noon to 6 pm and Sunday from noon to 4 pm. A cash-donations bar is set up and maintained by ARC members during an artists’ reception.

Advertising: Monthly listings, press releases and e-announcements are sent to our mailing list of approximately 2,000 names which is updated regularly and includes the following sources: private individuals, gallery owners, critics, collectors, colleges, newspapers, museums, radio and television stations.

Open Call for Art | "Sense of Place"

Elmhurst Art Museum is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2017 with its first open call exhibition. The theme of the exhibition, Sense of Place, recognizes the seminal role of the Elmhurst Artists' Guild and the forward-thinking group of teachers, artists and community organizers who founded the Museum in their hometown with the belief that people from all walks of life and professions can learn how to see and think differently through the study of art, architecture and design.

The exhibition will be curated by Frank Tumino, Curatorial Chair of the Elmhurst Artists' Guild; Carrie Secrist, owner of Carrie Secrist Gallery in Chicago; and Jenny Gibbs, Executive Director at Elmhurst Art Museum. The exhibition will be on display December 10, 2016 through February 12, 2017.

Cultural geographers, anthropologists, sociologists and urban planners study why certain places hold special meaning to particular people. Many places have a strong identity and character that is deeply felt by local inhabitants and visitors. Elmhurst is a small city (population 45,000) with a strong civic culture and a community that believes in the value of shared culture, education and worship; this is part of the "sense of place" of Elmhurst. The exhibition, Sense of Place, will explore the myriad tangible and intangible ways in which the visual arts can be imbued with a sense of place.

To submit, visit www.eam.submittable.com/submit.

All mediums considered.* Artwork submitted must have been created since 2014. All candidates must submit an artist’s statement of up to 250 words describing their general body of work. Artists may submit up to three works for consideration and up to two high-quality images of each work. For each work, artists must list title, date, material, dimensions, and up to 100 words on how it relates to the theme of the exhibition. Works must be able to fit through 95 x 66 inch doorways for installation purposes. A non-refundable fee of $35 is required with submission. Members of the Elmhurst Artists' Guild may submit for a discounted application fee of $20. Information about Guild membership can be found at www.elmhurstartistsguild.org/join.html.

Submissions close on September 1, 2016. Candidates will be notified of decisions by October 15, 2016. Exhibition dates are December 10, 2016 to February 12, 2017. Accepted works must be delivered to the museum (at the expense of the artist) between November 28 and December 7, 2016. Once on the museum’s premises, the works will be insured under the museum’s policy until the close of the exhibition. Artists are responsible for arranging and covering expenses for the return of their work, which must be picked up between February 13 and 17, 2017.
