Originally, sanctuaries were natural locations, such as groves or hills where the divine or sacred was believed to be especially present By the use of such places as a haven, the term has come to be used as a place where someone or something is protected or given shelter, as refuge or safety from pursuit, persecution, or other danger, typically used by displaced persons, refugees, and homeless people. This theme extends to what it means to have a home or a place of safety and what it means to not have one, issues we are currently facing globally, nationally, and in Oakland and the Bay Area. Juror rené de Guzman is the Director of Exhibition Strategy and Senior Curator of Art at the Oakland Museum of California (OMCA). Before joining OMCA in 2007, de Guzman was Director of Visual Arts at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, a contemporary art center in San Francisco. Past exhibitions include Modern Cartoonist: The Art of Dan Clowes, Question Bridge: Black Males, All Power to the People: Black Panthers at 50, and RESPECT: Hip-Hop Style and Wisdom, among others. Art + Movement

Eligibility:

We invite entries in any medium exploring the theme Art + Movement, inspired by questioning how art made in our current divisive state of cultural, political, and religious points of view will be regarded historically. Art movement is defined as a tendency or style in art with a specific common philosophy or goal, followed by a group of artists during a restricted period of time. Art history points to how various movements in art, referred to as isms (impressionism, cubism, fauvism, expressionism, surrealism) were reflections of the views of their time. Additionally, of course, movement also refers to a principle of composition in art and can be used to cause a visual tempo or beat.

Juror: Maria Porges

Maria Porges has pursued dual practices as an artist and a writer, teaching in both areas at CCA, principally in the Fine Arts graduate program since the late ‘80s. Her exhibition career of image/text sculpture and drawings has included solo shows at galleries, museums and alternative spaces. Her critical writing has appeared in many publications, including Artforum, Art in America, Sculpture, American Ceramics, Glass, the New York Times Book Review, and a host of now-defunct art magazines. She has also authored essays for more than 100 exhibition catalogues and has twice been in residence at the Headlands Center for the Arts. In 2016, she began the blog, wordsaboutart.com, where she writes about artists and visits to (unusual) museums and posts short fiction about the art world. She has written three artist’s books; Shortest Stories, coming out in 2019, consists of 100 microfictions paired with 100 collages, in which the pairing are intended to work together to create a narrative whole, rather than explaining or illustrating each other.
