Banff Musicians in Residence | Winter 2020

Overview

This program provides space and focused time for musicians of all genres to concentrate on artistic development while working on projects that can be either individually or group/ensemble based. You may be working in your established genre(s), or exploring a new one.

In addition to having the freedom to structure your time around the needs of your project, you will receive artistic inspiration and career advice from well-established faculty (visiting artists) who will be in residence at intervals throughout the program. The visiting artists come from all musical backgrounds, therefore over six weeks, participants will have access to a range of artistic influences.

Modern Composition with Gavin Bryars

Check out the report on Gavin's 2018 session here.Gavin Bryars is without a doubt one of the world's most celebrated living composers. He emerged to the musical establishment in the early sixties, playing bass with improvisers Derek Bailey and Tony Oxley - his relationship with improvisation was short lived, and by the late 60's he was working with John Cage, Cornelius Cardew and John White. His first major works - The Sinking of the Titanic (1969), originally released on Brian Eno's Obscure label in 1975, and Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet (1971) - were released in new versions in the 1990s, selling over a quarter of a million copies.
