Tough Art @ Home

Eligibility:

The Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh (CMP) is dedicated to fostering the talent and innovation of artists as experience makers. The Tough Art Residency Program, that began in 2007, was approaching its 14th year of existence this summer. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the residency had to be canceled for 2020 season.

In light of that, we began to consider how we might engage our audience while the Museum remains closed. The Museum is always committed to working with artists to present excellent contemporary art to our visitors. Every year artists are invited to work with the museum through a multitude of programs and projects, and the Museum is committed to continuing this mission throughout the closure.

Thinking about the possibilities during this age of online engagement, the fact that we aren't having in-person residencies, or even open to the public for visitors to interact with our current art installations, we were inspired to find a way to connect artists with our audience, and vice versa.

This has prompted a call-for-artists who are interested in making their work accessible to CMP’s audience. The challenge is for artists to create an art making activity related in some way to their artwork/process that would inspire a do-it-yourself project for people to create wherever they may be.

Residency Goals:

  • Create a do-it-yourself (D.I.Y.) art making project for people to do, wherever they may be, that relates to and is inspired by the artist’s work
  • Work collaboratively with Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh staff to create and develop an engaging artmaking activity that continues the Museum’s mission during closure
  • Give artists a platform on CMP’s website and social media platforms to share their work and reach a potentially new audience, which in turn, provides new avenues of art exploration for the Museum.

Logistics:

The residency offers a $200 artist stipend, that will be awarded to 5 artists.

Artists will be asked to work with CMP staff during the timeframe of late-September 2020 through October 2020, online, to produce a final product that will be disseminated to CMP networks beginning November 2020. This will be available through CMP’s web presence (websites, social media platforms, etc.) as a digital download/link.

Deadline & Notification:

Applications must be received by 11:59 pm on September 6, 2020. Selected Artists will be announced September 18th, 2020.

If Selected:

Artists will work with the project manager to produce:

Image of example of project

Visual representation of materials needed for creation

Step-by-step instructions (can be drawn images, pictures, video, etc.) for the D.I.Y. art making project

*1-3 days of work is estimated for this residency.

COMEL Award Contemporary Art: Aluminium Bonds

Eligibility:

The contemporary art COMEL award Vanna Migliorin, the international competition dedicated to the creative use of aluminium, is back for its VIII edition.

All artists 18 years old and above who live or work within European borders are called to challenge themselves each year with a theme related to the characteristics of this splendid and surprising metal, aiming to discover, or highlight, its expressive, aesthetic, communicative and constructive potentialities. This year's theme is Aluminium Bonds.

Aluminium has a natural tendency to join, connect and merge with other metals, in fact in nature it is never found free.

It is one of the few elements of the periodic table to be trivalent, meaning that, each of its atom uses three electrons to combine with other elements. This exquisitely chemical characteristic is easily reflected in the metaphorical and symbolic understanding of the concept of bond and translates into the positive values of openness, generosity, exchange and desire to create links with other people.

All concepts that are supported and conveyed by the COMEL Award which at each edition becomes an opportunity for artists from different countries to meet, and encourages the sharing and mutual enrichment of all participants.

Those values, this year, due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, become even more important and deeply felt: bonds that remain strong despite the social distancing that we are required to maintain.  For this reason and in order to continue to look to the future with positivity, the organizers have decided to open the call even if there are still no certainties about the exit from the lockdown in almost all European countries. The intent is to open the registrations anyway, deadline is so far October 31st and hopefully the final exhibition will be held in the first months of next year.

Registration is free. Painting, sculpture, design, photography and installation artworks, using aluminium as their main element and respect the proposed theme, will be admitted. A jury of experts will choose 13 finalist works (13 such as the atomic number of aluminium), which will be exhibited at the Spazio COMEL Arte Contemporanea gallery in Latina. Among these, a winner will be selected who will receive a cash prize (3500 euros), and will be the protagonist of a solo show with a dedicated catalogue.

Deadlines of the exhibition and of the award ceremony will be communicated as soon as possible.

Eligibility:

Are you or someone you know looking for artistic exposure in NYC?

Big Screen Plaza is now accepting submissions for #ArtOnScreen, a curated series of digital and artistic programming that will be displayed throughout 2020. We’re eager to showcase work from many creative disciplines. Please note this call may not be best-suited for every type of artist or artistic discipline. However, if it matches your current artistic goals, or your work, it could be a perfect opportunity — check the guidelines below before submitting!

About Big Screen Plaza:
Big Screen Plaza is a 10,000 sq. ft. public plaza in New York City that features a 30 ft. HD digital screen. Throughout the year, the screen displays a rotating collection of digital exhibitions, including photography, animation, visual art, and more. Located between the Empire State Building, Madison Square Garden, and the art galleries of Chelsea, the plaza’s central location provides an ideal venue for generating exposure for local and international artists to engage the New York community.

GUIDELINES:

• The #ArtOnScreen series is not exhibited with any audio, so all work submitted must be able to be viewed and enjoyed without any audio. That does not mean the files cannot contain audio, but please note all work will be silently displayed to the public, similar to the digital billboards in Times Square.
• Content must be suitable to be displayed publicly and viewed by an audience of all ages.
• Please don’t send works-in-progress. All work must be completed upon submission.
• Submissions are accepted on a year-round, rolling basis. Due to the quantity of submissions, please allow up to three months for your work to be reviewed. No calls, please.

BEST WORK TO SUBMIT:

• Studio and Visual Art
• Fashion and Art Films
• Animation of all type that is not dependent on dialogue
• Timelapse or Aerial / Drone Footage

WHAT NOT TO SUBMIT:

• Any work that features heavily-synced dialogue (Note on subtitles in FAQ)
• Any long-form video content. Artist exhibitions per artist are 10-30 minutes each.

• Work that is primarily corporate-branded or advertising-based (Unfortunately we’re not looking to display mere commercials or ad-based work, though there are exceptions to every rule.)
• Any work with graphic violence or nudity
• Sculpture or any performance-based work which requires in-person or 3D display. All exhibitions will only occur by being broadcast on our digital screen. Photos of sculpture could work, but we cannot install work into our space.
