Residency Opportunity - all creatives - research & development exploring arts & science

Call for Artists & Creative Practitioners:

The London Borough of Sutton has developed an exciting new Research and Development (R&D) residency open to all creative practitioners . Taking place between August 2023 and January 2024, the non-residential Creative IMPACT Residency aims to support creatives who are looking to develop their own practice, specifically within the intersections of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths (S.T.E.A.M.), and with a focus on the incredible work currently taking place at The London Cancer Hub development area. Practitioners working in any artform and discipline are encouraged to apply for this unique residency. Applications must be realistic in terms of budget and timeframe and must also have a clear research focus - for this initial stage of application, this could be a spark of an idea.

Art and science are often perceived as two separate disciplines, however, both are fueled by curiosity and investigation. The similarities between the two and the impact of each on the other are clear: creativity is required to make scientific breakthroughs, and art is often informed by scientific knowledge. Collaborations in science and art are commonly used to educate the public about science in a captivating way, but the London Borough of Sutton recognises that creative collaborations can also have major benefits to research developments for both scientists and artists alike.

This is why the Sutton STEAMs Ahead team are looking to support creative practitioners, of any artform and discipline, with a proposal that clearly explores the intersection of art and science.

Application is in two stages: Stage 1 (expression of interest / EOI) requires applicants to answer a series of questions with short answers; then following review of this initial stage, Stage 2 (full proposal) will shortlistup to 5 applicants who will receive £250 for their time to fully develop their proposal. The final selected artist will receive £8,000 for their residency period.

Deadline for Stage 1 is midday on 5 July 2023. Deadline for Stage 2 (full proposals) is 31 July 2023. N.B. only those who apply to Stage 1 to be considered for Stage 2.
