Statement :

Nicolas Boulet is based in Paris, France. His photographic work focuses on the documentary portrait. Characterized by a strong tendency to chiaroscuro, the artist's photographs tend to empty the frames of the image to make room for the expressions of the faces and gestures of the bodies, contemporary bodies. Boulet also explores the boundaries between the virtual world and the real world, street photography and studio photography.

In front of
Performers of sex. This is how the men and women who sell their body and pornography on the Web are presented to the viewers who buy their online service. If the network is public, the moment of performance is "private", and only visible to buyers. Yet, there are all these virtual moments ahead, where those who trade their bodies (amateurs or professionals) let themselves see, in their intimacy behind the window of the screen. I was interested precisely at these moments. Moments when the surfer voyeur scrutinizes, contemplates, without the knowledge of sex workers. Moments of pause, of boredom sometimes, to let go, where before the performance, the screen lets the other reflect its reflection. But who is it really about? We look for a hint of reality behind these faces hidden under the splitting of their image masks.

Passer-by
Humanist photography has made street portraiture a way to collect faces at different times. Behind the intrigue of the discovery of this other, there is always amazement, the mark of otherness. My photograph of street and passers-by is thus like a catalog, an archipelago of faces, contemporaries and witnesses of the humanity of our time. In obtaining my shots of passers-by, a double protocol: the choice of chiaroscuro, and the after-the-fact constitution of a fictitious narration with the end-to-end placing of the obtained images. The play between street documentary photography and studio staging due to the punctual lighting on faces on a plain black background, is also part of my approach.

Bio:

After studying philosophy and journalism, I decided to change my focus to my passion: photography, and specifically portrait photography. I began as an assistant to the French photographer, Christophe Beauregard. I currently work as a freelance photographer (portrait, events) and instructor for amateurs and professionals. For three years I have been running photo workshops for people with disabilities in partnership with associations in Paris.
