The Center for Ballet and the Arts at New York University - Resident Fellowship
Category:
Overview
The Center for Ballet and the Arts at New York University Fellowship Program offers residencies to scholars and artists of all disciplines to develop projects that expand the way we think about the history, practice, and performance of dance. Past fellows have come from wide-ranging disciplines such as history, design, philosophy, visual arts, and more. Fellows are not required to be experts in ballet or dance, but must have an interest in engaging with the art.
The fellowship provides space, a stipend, and the time to pursue rigorous work. Fellows also gain new colleagues and a broad community of scholars and artists, two communities that do not often meet.
Applications for 2021-2022 fellowships will be open from September 15, 2020 at 9:00am EST through November 2, 2020 at 9:00am EST. Applicants will be notified in March 2021.
Fellowship Award Includes:
- Stipend of $750/week
- Access to CBA’s community of 150+ artists and scholars
- Use of CBA’s dance studio, offices, and conference rooms
- Housing, as needed and available
- Round trip transportation to and from New York City
- J-1 visa facilitation
Expectations
- Work at CBA for the majority of your residency.
- Present your work in a seminar to current and alumni fellows.
- Attend CBA events, including weekly seminars and CBA’s public programs.
- Give and receive feedback, collaborate, and otherwise engage with your cohort.
- Submit feedback on your fellowship as requested.
- Note: At this time, The Center cannot commit to additional funding for collaborators. If a fellow decides to work with collaborators (e.g. designers, musicians, dancers), the fellow is expected to pay those collaborators out of his or her own fellowship.
Duration
Fellowship timing and duration depend on individual fellow needs and project scopes. Prior residencies have run between four and sixteen weeks. The residency must occur during NYU’s academic year (September 2021 – May 2022).
Eligibility
- Scholar or artist* pursuing an original project related to dance.
- Applicants applying with scholarly projects (e.g. journal articles, monographs) must have a Ph.D.
- Applicants must show exceptional promise and/or have demonstrated significant accomplishments in their field. We encourage applicants from all career stages to apply.
- Dance expertise is not required.
- Students (as of September 2021) are not eligible.
- NYU faculty are welcome and encouraged to apply. Payment structure may vary based on faculty appointment and school.
*Past fellows have come from dozens of disciplines as wide-ranging as history, design, philosophy, visual arts, religion, literature, and more.
The CBA Fellowship Program does not support:
- Projects in arts administration
- Projects focused on the applicant’s personal memoir or autobiography
- Projects involving giving dance classes
- Projects reviewing prior work, such as:
- editing, digitizing, or organizing archives
- editing films or book anthologies
Application materials
The application should reflect the applicant’s genuine aspirations and expertise. We expect scholars and artists to each demonstrate different strengths that are reflective of their training. Project proposals are not required to involve both scholarly and artistic inquiry. Successful proposals will focus on the project’s essential research questions and will be clear, concise, and free of jargon.
Applications will be open from September 15, 2020 at 9:00am EST through November 2, 2020 at 9:00am EST. Applicants will be notified in March 2021.
