Country where you live:

City where you live:

Statement :

A selection of images from “Portals”, an on-going series exploring a world without the conventional notion of space and time, a world in-between places. These surreal landscapes evoke feelings of nostalgia and futuristic hope, created in reference to the conventions of Sino-Asian stereotypes, childhood memories, and cultures. I’m interested in surfacing the contradictory emotions of being in multiple places at once, to explore how understanding this dynamic brings a new perspective to debates on the value of diversity.

Bio:

Bernice Liu aka Spime a Toronto-based Chinese artist. She has a bachelor in graphic design from OCADU and illustration certificate from Parsons The New School of Design. Clients include Ray-Ban, Bloomberg and The New York Times.

Liu weaves a meditative and surreal tale through her work. Empowered by the language of cultural stereotypes, her practice spans medium of digital art and light installation. Spime's paintings are exploring the collision of western and eastern cultures. In surfacing the weight of joys, pains, digital hybridity, and complex emotions of living in between these two cultures through playful and colorful displays. Her delicate work elicits a cross-stimulation of the senses, where time and its flow are suspended in a gentle state of contemplation.
