Wassaic Project 2020 Summer Residency FAMILY Open Call

Residencies are 1–8 weeks in length and applicants accepted through this program are considered full participants of the Wassaic Project Artist Residency Program.   

Residents are selected by a review committee composed of the Wassaic Project Co-Directors, the Residency Director and professionals in the field. Successful residents will be selected based on the quality of their work, commitment to their practice, and their ability to contribute to the community at large.

The Wassaic Project broadly defines “Family” as comprised of a group of more than one individual where there is an in-house, and dependent, caregiving relationship. The Wassaic Project recognizes that artists who have caregiving relationships, as providers or recipients, often opt-out of peer community building for practical reasons. The Wassaic Project aims to provide family accommodations which increase access to our residency program.

Examples of caregiving may include, but are not limited to:

Parent/Child (parent is caregiver)

Child/Parent (child is caregiver)

Partner/Partner (where one partner is a supportive caregiver of other and cohabitation is required for caregiving)

A recipient of caregiving.

A self-selection into this application for separate and additional housing space by identifying as a Family applicant.

Residents are selected by a review committee composed of professionals in their field, the Wassaic Project Co-Directors and Residency Director. Artists and writers will be selected based on the quality of their work, commitment to their practice, and ability to interact positively with the community at large.

 

The Wassaic Project cultivates and supports a community for emerging and professional contemporary artists, writers and other creatives. Housed in historic, landmark buildings, the residency program offers between nine and thirteen artists each month the opportunity to live and work in the heart of a rural community. The Wassaic Project seeks artists working in a diverse range of media who want to produce, explore, challenge, and expand on their current art-making practices, while participating in a community-based arts organization. The Wassaic Project welcomes and values participants of all identities and backgrounds.

 

STUDIOS + FACILITIES + ACCOMMODATIONS

Residents will receive an adaptable raw studio space in a historic livestock barn. All studios are roughly 200-300 square feet. Artists will have 24 hour access to their studio and accommodations which include a private residence with three bedrooms, living room, kitchen, and two full baths. Residents also have access to workshop facilities as well as the potential for expansion of workshop space and the possibility of working outside. The residency’s workshop facilities include a Wood Shop, Print Shop (silkscreen studio) and a kiln. 

 

PROGRAMMING

Two to three times a month, artists-in-residence are invited to sign up for one-on-one studio visits with Visiting Artists/Critics. Our embedded critics - Ghost of a Dream - also make group studio visits each month, along with our Residency Director and additional WP staff. All residents are invited to participate in a monthly evening of artist’s talks and presentations, as well as Open Studios towards the end of their residency.

 

FINANCIAL INFO + FELLOWSHIPS

In an effort to serve and support emerging artists, we are able to subsidize residencies for all individual artists who do not have other forms of support. Thanks to the generous support of donors and grants, the fee for the Family artist residency is $900 per month per resident, which may be prorated. We may provide up to $300 per month in additional financial assistance based on artist need. 

Our intention is for financial assistance to be given to artists for whom it would be impossible to attend without financial support. If that is not the case for you, please do not apply for assistance. Financial assistance is provided to reduce financial hardship; our allocation is not based on merit. Each year the amount of financial assistance we are able to give is determined by our budget, which fluctuates annually.

 

EDUCATION FELLOWSHIP

Our expanded Education Fellowship program awards three free 2-3 month residencies in exchange for extensive participation in the Wassaic Project’s education programming, which connects the local community to contemporary artists and artistic practices. Recipients of Fall and Spring Education Fellowships will work primarily as Teaching Artists in our Wassaic X Webutuck program, which builds critical thinking and creative problem solving skills through collaborations between emerging artists and public high school students. Recipients of the Summer Education Fellowship will work as Teaching Artists and facilitators in many of our summer programs including Art Scouts, a free summer camp for K-6th graders, and Art Nest, our drop-in making space. All Education Fellows will gain extensive curriculum-building and teaching experience.

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR SPRING/SUMMER 2020 RESIDENCY PROGRAM

Live, work and engage with the local community of Red Hook, Brooklyn at our studio DE-CONSTRUKT.

Share a beautiful spacious 3000 sq. ft. loft with beautiful skylights, a photography darkroom, an art book library, wet sinks, and event space. Private fully-furnished bedrooms, one with a separate studio, with shared bathroom and kitchen. Accessible on-street parking and roof access with a view of Manhattan.

We invite artists, photographers, musicians, filmmakers, writers, curators, and researchers to apply for 2020 residency opportunities. We provide a space to develop new ideas, create temporal work and encouragement to form new networks. All participants must make a public event in Red Hook, and/or work within the community. We will work with each resident to organize their event and will publicize. The residency time frame is for Spring/Summer (May/June) . Artists are required to stay at least 2 weeks. Please note two-week residencies make it difficult to organize events due to the short time frame.

Call for Applications: MacDowell Fall 2021 Residency

MacDowell provides time, space, and an inspiring environment to artists of exceptional talent. Emerging and established artists may apply in the following disciplines: architecture, film/video arts, interdisciplinary arts, literature, music composition, theatre, and visual arts. A MacDowell Fellowship consists of exclusive use of a studio, accommodations, and three prepared meals a day for two weeks to two months. MacDowell believes that all talented artists should have the opportunity a MacDowell Fellowship provides. There is no cost for a Fellowship; however, artists are responsible for materials and travel expenses. In order to open the residency experience to a broader community of artists, MacDowell offers two financial assistance programs to those who have been awarded a Fellowship and can document financial need. Through the generosity of several foundations and individuals, need-based stipends are available to artists who would not otherwise be able to afford the time away that a Fellowship requires. Additionally, travel reimbursement grants are available to defray the cost of domestic and international travel to and from New Hampshire. MacDowell encourages applications from artists representing the widest possible range of perspectives and demographics. The sole criterion for acceptance is artistic excellence.

Open Call: Space118 Contemporaries Residency 2020

Space 118 is delighted to announce its Open Call for artists and writers for their 2020 Residency Program, “Space 118 Contemporaries 2020”.

Space118 will nominate two artists and one writer for an eight week residency at Space118. The residency will be held in three slots, of two months eachMarch-April, June-July, and September-October 2020. The writers and artists can choose the slot convenient to them. The artist will also receive a stipend and accommodation during their residency.

The Space118 Contemporaries residency provides emerging artists and writers from across India with an opportunity for exchange and dialogue. It aims to provide young artists and writers,  a forum for experimentation and interaction with the larger creative community, and attempts to create a network of diverse artists across mediums and disciplines.

To mark the 10 years of Space118, we have decided to launch the Space118 Contemporaries 2020, which will be one of the  new age programmes in our roster. Functioning as a unique residency model that closely curates artists at the start of their professional careers. The Space118 Contemporaries 2020 is populated with artists’ visits and interactions, studio visits and curated exhibition walkthroughs for the winner to have a gamut of art-related experiences and exposure. The aim of the Space118 Contemporaries is to provide infrastructure, inspiration and mentorship to emerging artists and art practices in Mumbai city.

The Space118 Contemporaries 2020 residency ends with an Open Day, where resident artists show their works in progress and interact with audiences. The Open Studio day is a great learning opportunity for young artists to showcase their own practice and get valuable feedback and criticism from their peers, colleagues, senior art practitioners, art critics and the public at large.

The artists will be chosen by a select jury that comprises of Shilpa Gupta, Mortimer Chatterjee and Anurag Khanna.

The writers will be selected by jury members: Anupa Mehta and Nancy Adajania.

Shilpa Gupta,  (b. 1976, India) studied at Sir J. J. School of Art (Sculpture). She has had solo shows at Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati, OK Center for Contemporary Art in Linz and Arnolfini in Bristol and has participated in biennales in Venice, Berlin, Kochi, Lyon, Gwangju, Havana, Yokohama, Liverpool amongst others. Her work has been shown in Moma, Tate Modern, Centre Pompidou, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New Museum and Mori Museum.

Mortimer Chatterjee, (b. 1975, UK) received his Masters in the History of Indian Art and Architecture from the School of Oriental and African Studies, London. He moved to Mumbai in 2001 while working for British auction house Bowring’s. In 2003, he began Chatterjee & Lal along with his wife. Based in Colaba’s art district of Mumbai, the gallery’s program is now focused both on the work of emerging artists and historical material. In the last ten years the gallery has been witness to groundbreaking shows by artists, such as Rashid Rana, Nikhil Chopra and Hetain Patel. Mortimer’s recent academic projects have included a co-authored publication on the art collection of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research along with an exhibition of that collection at the National Gallery of Modern Art, Mumbai. He has also been the art consultant for the Taj Group of Hotels for more than 12 years.

Anurag Khanna, was awarded the title of “Young Collector of the Year” by Forbes Art Award India in 2014, the self-taught art enthusiast is one of the few Indian art collectors who collects video art extensively. Anurag has earned the reputation of being quite a risk taker and has become one of the few collectors in India, who has dedicated a significant portion of his collection to experimental practices and video art. Given his relative distance from the artworld in cities like Mumbai and Delhi, his vision seems that much more impressive.

Anupa Mehta, (b. 1965, India) a veteran of the Indian art community, with over two decades of experience in providing strategic inputs to arts projects requiring support vis-a-vis planning, programming, marketing and fund-raising.  She has gestated several institutional and private arts programs and events, and her roster of clients is prestigious and diverse. Anupa is an author, an arts consultant and a Narrative Therapist. A graduate in English Literature, Anupa holds a Masters degree in Narrative Therapy & Community work from the University of Melbourne. She is certified in counseling protocol from Spring Counseling, Mumbai, and has trained in story-telling with an emphasis on cross-cultural psychology, with Jungian writer and analyst, Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estes. Anupa has been a journalist, a magazine and book editor, a columnist, and a gallery owner. She has authored INDIA 20, a book of interviews with Contemporary Indian artists, a novel, The Waiting Room (Penguin, 2007), and a book of short stories titled Unseasonal Rain (Estrade 2014; 2019). .

Nancy Adajania,  (b.  1971, India) is a cultural theorist, art critic and independent curator to start with an introduction to her extensive work. Adajania has written and lectured extensively on contemporary Indian art, especially new media art and its political and cultural contexts, at international venues such as Documenta 11, Kassel; the Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie (ZKM), Karlsruhe; the Neuer Berliner Kunstverein and the Transmediale, Berlin; the Danish Contemporary Art Foundation, Copenhagen; Lottringer 13, Munich, among others. She was the first coordinator of the newly founded crafts research department of the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA), Bombay during 1994–1995, Adajania organised a cycle of symposia and workshops that explored the tension between contemporary art emerging from an urban milieu and the present-day manifestation of the traditional crafts. She was the Editor-in-Chief for Art India from 2000-2002, during which Adajania developed a discursive space singlehandedly, in an Asian context, for emergent new-media and interactive public art practices and social projects on a global level

Create more prestige in the art world

Problems
1) In the current art world artists search and fight for “references” to endorse their work and name. Every “reference” in the CV might take years, a lot of money, tears and sweat.
2) The other problem artists might face is that they never get feedback on their work – to find out what those key players on the art world really think about their work.

Let’s make the way shorter!

ODBK, through its database of art world participants called the Art Market Regulation Commission (AMARC), is offering a new way to build references in a faster and easier way. From the list of “Top” and “Expert” evaluators of the AMARC, artists can require an evaluation of their work and also a “reference” to the evaluator which they can print in their CV to endorse their work. And receive an honest feedback, opinion and advice from the evaluator. ODBK will maintain and publish a page on the website which will include a certification of the “reference”.

stARTup Art Fair Houston 2019: Call for Artists

stARTup Art Fair Houston is a contemporary art fair designed for artists, by artists.

Our three-day fair is October 11-13, 2019 at the historic Hotel Icon, where authentic Texas charm meets contemporary luxury in the heart of downtown Houston. stARTup takes place concurrently with the Texas Contemporary gallery fair, 10 blocks away. Participating artists will have a fantastic opportunity to expose new work to a myriad of collectors, curators, gallery owners, and art consultants in the 4th largest art market in the U.S.

The core mission of stARTup Art Fair is to provide a marketplace that gives artists the power to present and sell work on their own terms. All sales proceeds belong 100% to the artists.

Applications for stARTup Art Fair houston will be accepted through August 11, 2019. Those selected from the open application process will each take over a hotel room for the course of three days to present a solo show of their work. Through its democratic, online application, artists get the opportunity to have their work reviewed by an impressive Selection Committee with a diverse range of art world professionals:
