Scenic Carpenter Practicum

Overview

For three months, participants will work with Banff Centre’s Scenic Carpentry team on all Banff Centre productions, co-commissions, presentations, external commissions, conferences, and outreach programs.

Responsibilities include interpreting and generating technical information from drafting, material handling, safe operation and maintenance of Scenic Shop equipment, implementing a build plan, participation in the efficient construction of stage scenery, as well as loading productions in and out. 

Participants will have an opportunity to learn and use a wide variety of building techniques as well as wood and metal tools in our large and fully outfitted shop.

Wardrobe Technician Practicum

Overview

Practicum participants will experience one-on-one mentorship from our professional team who will guide them through the production process. Practicums will gain exposure to all creative Theatre departments with the opportunity to exchange ideas and gain insight into these departments through workshops and forums. Stitching, dressing, and wardrobe management placements are available.

Participants will observe and participate in the creative production process from interpretive design concept through creative development to realization. The program will include analysis of all areas of the production schedule with emphasis on the importance of the participant’s role as an effective member of the collaborative process.

Scenic Artist Practicum

Overview

Under the direction and mentorship of Banff Centre’s head scenic artist, practicum participants will learn classic and modern scenic art ideas, processes, tools, and techniques. 

Participants will interpret designer information and translate it into high quality finished surfaces as required for each production, in communication and collaboration with other Banff Centre departments. 

The techniques, styles, materials, and finishes explored will vary due to the nature of the designs. Practicums will also be responsible in part for the organization and maintenance of the Paint department’s tools, materials, and spaces (office, workshop, and studio).

Boots and Shoes Technician Practicum

Overview

The Boots and Shoes Practicum program builds the basic skill set required for boots and shoes work in the theatre industry. The program will develop participants’ existing experience, as well as explore new techniques adhering to the theatre industry’s safety and aesthetic standards.

Specific projects will largely be determined by the summer performance programming at Banff Centre. Project work as required by the shows will include soling, repairs, paint, alterations, and leather work.

Participants are encouraged to engage in the broad range of workshops offered by other departments during the practicum program. Exposure to a wide range of perspectives and approaches is essential to the collaborative nature of theatre.

Wigs and Makeup Technician Practicum

Overview

This is presently the only program in Canada with a hands-on, self-led learning atmosphere where mentor support is provided. Starting with the basics, practicum participants will learn about wig and hair types and the various construction techniques for making wig foundations and facial hair, including the skills of ventilating/knotting. Styling tools and methods for various periods and purposes will be a focus of activity. 

Makeup will play a significant part in participant-led projects, which will also include special effects. Show-based learning will occur as participants meet the practical and design requirements of supporting a production.

BRIClab Residency Open Call 2019-20

BRIClab is a commissioning and residency development program for New York City-based artists to explore and expand the possibilities of their work in music, dance, theater, and multidisciplinary performance. Free and open exploration and intentional commitment to process—with the support of the staff and resources that BRIC offers—are at the heart of the BRIClab program. Artists receive stipends and an intensive residency in BRIC's Artist Studio with development time, opportunities for artistic mentoring, and work-in-process performances.
