EMPTY PLACES : ABANDONED SPACES | CALL FOR ENTRIES | AN INTERNATIONAL JURIED PHOTO EXHIBITION

Entry Deadline | December 31st, 2021

Notice of Acceptance | January 12th, 2022

Exhibition Dates | Feb 19th - March 5th, 2022

Theme: Empty Places : Abandoned Spaces | Juror: Elizabeth Flinsch

Through the visual representation of abandoned spaces, artifacts of history are at once fresh and new, ancient, and decayed. The past continues to live in these forsaken, ruined, or empty spaces and we ask—Who were the people who lived and worked here? What were their lives like? What were their stories? What happened to them in these spaces?

Praxis Gallery seeks the submission of photographic art that explores the visual and social significance of abandoned space-where derelict factories, churches, private houses, or other empty places serve as the basis for creative investigation. All genres, capture types, color and black & white, traditional, and non-traditional photographic and digital post-production processes are welcome for submission

JUROR | ELIZABETH FLINSCH

Elizabeth Flinsch is the editor of SHOTS Magazine, an independent magazine of black and white photography. “She Came in Through the Bathroom Window” sang the Beatles

“Lookin’ Out My Backdoor” sang Creedence Clearwater Revival

Doors and windows and arches and frames and tunnels are so much a part of our lives. There are so many ways to think about them. We can look at them, or through them.  We can poke our hand out the window to test the weather, or just see a wonderful scene a little differently when framed by an arch or array of tree limbs in a park.

For this call your images can focus on the "portal" itself like a closed door or a wonderful windowsill or the view through the portal to the other side. Does it frame the main subject of the photograph or does it add another dimension, such as the distortions of old glass or reflections in windowpanes.

Once again, we invite you to be creative and have fun in the process.

As with all calls, all 2D photographic art is accepted.

$4000, listing on the website, catalog

Narrative ~ Figments or Fragments

OPEN CALL | NARRATIVE ~ FIGMENTS OR FRAGMENTS | GUEST CURATED EXHIBIT BY EMMA POWELL

Entry Deadline | Dec 15th, 2021

Notice of Acceptance | Dec 23rd, 2021

Exhibition Dates | Jan 15th - 29th, 2022

Theme: Narrative ~ Figments or Fragments | Juror: Emma Powell

The photograph’s power as a narrative tool is derived from the impression that what is captured within the frame is an accurate representation of what actually occurred at a specific moment in time. As complete or comprehensive as any narrative may appear to be, it will always be subject to a process of including some elements and excluding others. These inclusions and exclusions are a crucial part of what photographic storytelling is all about; that which is presented within the frame to the viewer – and that which is left out or left to the viewer’s imagination.

Praxis Gallery seeks the submission of photographic art that explores the development of visual narratives through the still image. Stories may take any shape or form. They may be literal or fantasy, documentary, or fiction; complex or minimal. All genres, capture types, black & white and color, traditional and non-traditional photographic and digital post-production processes are welcome for submission.

Guest Curator | Emma Powell

Emma Powell’s fine art photography incorporates alternative photographic processes to illustrate fantasy narratives. Powell received her MFA in photography from Rochester Institute of Technology. Her work has been exhibited both within the United States and internationally. Powell has taught photography at the college level for over ten years, including full-time at Colorado College and Iowa State University. She has also been an instructor, leading alternative process photography workshops at Penland School of Crafts, and other educational institutions.
