Presented in partnership between L’AiR ARTS at FIAP PARIS and DRAWinternational, Caylus, France

The invisible realm of possibility 

Two-part residency program:
Part I - Creative Practice in a medieval town of Caylus
Part II - Contextual Research and Exhibition in Paris

The project will focus upon notions of intention and the physical act of drawing as it arrives as a vectorial force on a material surface. One could say, an infrastructure from where other possibilities collide, from common habitual behaviours toward the realm of the unknown. 

A conscious reflective engagement with the world felt through our our skin, flesh and bones is a spatial process of perception directed upon an environment of mass, volume and depth. A world encountered by the whole human interactive corporeal sensorium through which we become inexorably a part. As such, there can be no gap between biology and society as we move in and around the world, finding out that we are made of the same fundamental stuff as everything else. From this perspective our bodies are situated ecologically, in a role which is not simply ‘subjective’ but social and of nature itself. It is a body for others as it exists in its tension between agencies of power and systems of resistance, what is and what is in the becoming. 

To trust oneself and to be honest in a creative act, which takes cognisance of the world around can only help foster an initial space of meaningful conscious engagement. A continued focus and sense of purpose, with a loss of self, can only lead to a cyclical state of pre-reflective awareness. It is the doors of realisation and insight that resides in the depths of a primordial, intercorporeal, ‘chiasmic’ intertwining of truths, a radical space to be. 

As David Abram has stated:

. .. meaning sprouts in the very depths of the sensory world, in the heat of meeting, encounter, participation. (Abram, 1997,p75)

Residency Program

This residency program is two-fold: a full month of creative practice at DRAWinternational, located in a medieval town of Caylus, near Toulouse. Followed by two weeks in Paris with L'AiR Arts for contextual research and exploration, while exhibiting the work at FIAP Paris.
​Artists have an option to apply for a full program (7 weeks) or only for 2 weeks in Paris.

Part I - Caylus, France with DRAWinternational: Drawing Research Action Works
February 20 - March 29 (5 weeks)

This art production residency program continues to expand notions of drawing: to cater for creative people in pursuit of new and dynamic form, in preparation for exhibition, publication or postgraduate qualification and support artists in their professional practice/research. 

The DRAWinternational residency in Caylus includes:

Accommodation - self-catering apartment with private bedroom and shared kitchen, bathroom, dining/sitting room and gardens.

Evening meal together on Monday to Thursday / welcome and closing dinner.

Individual studio: Artists are allocated individual studio spaces to suit particular project requirements, with unlimited access.

Academic support and access to relevant documentation.

Regular discussion of work to include individual and group critiques and practical workshops

Organisation and promotion of an event at the beginning of the residency for the public. Editing and translation of written text.

Cultural Program (visits, meeting and other facilitated activities together)

Support for artists to encourage integration within the community.

Internet access (wifi) for personal laptops.

Additional facilities include, flexible studio space for large scale works/installation/performance/music, a technical workshop, technical assistance

Promotion of the residency via DRAWinternational's website, radio and local newspapers.

Part II - Paris, France with L’AIR ARTS at FIAP: Exploration, Reflection & Exhibition 
March 29 – April 12 (2 weeks)

After a full month of creative practice and art production at the DRAWinternational Residency, artists will travel to Paris for a two-week program of research, exploration and reflection with L’AiR Arts, as well as exhibiting their work at FIAP Paris.

Exhibition

Work produced at DRAWinternational will be curated for an exhibition at FIAP Paris, by John and Grete McNorton. Dr. John McNorton, a former visiting professor at the Royal College of Art in London and Head of Centre for Art and Design Education at the University of Wales Institute Cardiff, will give an opening presentation to the exhibition.

​Please note: those artists joining for the Paris part only, will be able to showcase their work, but will not be included in the curated exhibition.

Reflection 

During the residency period, artists are encouraged to reflect and exchange ideas with their fellow residents. We also organize facilitated artistic discussion sessions with curators, who offer portfolio readings and mentorship to the artists.  Artists can also use shared work space and are invited to offer talks / workshops relating to their practice and participate in an Open Studio event.

During the residency in Paris, group visits will be organized to relevant contemporary art institutions, such as:

Artists will also be provided with a historical context related to the location of the residency in Paris, including:

Tour of Artistic Montparnasse 

Zadkine Museum-Atelier (learning about artist's legacy in both Caylus and Paris)

Giacometti Institute

L'AiR Arts Residency in Paris includes:

Accommodation in either a private or shared room (based on your preferences and availability, see Centre page) 

Access to additional facilities including, plenty of common areas, cafe, an outdoor terrace and garden, laundry facility, meeting rooms and internet access (wifi) for personal laptops

Flexible meal plan: buffet breakfast and either lunch or dinner of traditional french cuisine (with a to-go option)

Welcoming and closing dinner / reception at a historic restaurant or an artistic venue

Shared work space and open studio event or/and exhibition 

Exhibition space for large scale works / installation / performance / sound, technical assistance

Cultural Program (visits, meeting and other facilitated group activities)

Portfolio readings and discussion sessions with curator

Support for artists to encourage integration and intercultural exchange

Exposure on L'AiR Arts website and social media

Promotion of the residency via local media

Program fees

The fees include full residency program depending on the session and its duration and are based on accommodation selection. Financial support is available for artists based in less economically developed countries and artists chosen by art collectors / patrons on our selection committee. Caylus + Paris: February 20 - April 12 (7 weeks):

3600 euro (based on private accommodation in Caylus, but shared in Paris between 2 - 4 artists)

3950 euro (based on private accommodation in both Caylus and Paris)

Caylus only, February 20 - March 29 (5 weeks):

1750 euro (based on private accommodation) 

Paris only, March 29 – April 12 (2 weeks): 

1850 euro (based on shared accommodation between 2 – 4 artists)

2200 euro (based on private accommodation)

Expenses such as airfare, additional meals and transportation, as well as any art materials and other purchases are not included in the residency fee.

Application and Selection Process

Artists will be selected on the quality of their residency application, and its relevance to current discourse about drawing. Applications are reviewed by a panel of international and Paris-based arts professionals. The selection process ranges from an open call application and panel process to nominations or by invitation.
