The word WOMAN evokes a myriad of different concepts and emotions such as sensitivity, strength, magic, charm, grace, patience, fantasy and life itself.

All over the world women experience discrimination and violence. In many countries, both criminal law and civil law echo discrimination against women in laws relating to marriage, inheritance and even property. But even in countries where women have achieved equal rights, often in practice this equality remains illusory. Within public institutions with decision-making power, women continue to be vastly underrepresented.

While for some the word “woman” is defined by the female biological sex, for others it only refers to a cultural construction —a gender— whose content depends on a certain time and place, or on each person. There are even those who consider that it is a binary category that must be overcome. And between these ends of the spectrum, we find an infinity of conceptions that often do not have any common denominator.

What does it mean to be a woman? Can we distinguish in it some substantive characteristic that essentially differentiates it from man? Does it make sense to even make that distinction?
