Moments Like This - Jessica Bingham

Submissions Due on July 11, 2021 by 11:59 PM CST

 $30.00 USD

Woman Made Gallery is seeking submissions for our August-September 2021 group exhibition juried by Jessica Bingham (artist, curator at University Galleries of Illinois State University; director and co-founder of Project 1612). This exhibition will be held at Woman Made Gallery located at 2150 S. Canalport Ave., Chicago, IL 60608 in the Pilsen neighborhood.

EXHIBITION DESCRIPTION
Under capitalism, we are asked to make every hour of every day productive -- through work, through consuming, through buying, through wanting more.  But after a year of isolation, confinement, of racial justice uprising, of trauma from police violence, of illness, what can a new reality look like if we continue to live slowly? If we continue to pause, process what we have collectively gone through, and move at the speed of humanity rather than the speed of production?

This exhibition considers recent practices of a Slow Living lifestyle, and invites work that offers opportunities to slow down, contemplate, process, rest, and come back into ourselves and our communities.

Woman Made Gallery seeks artwork in all mediums. We are dreaming of painterly, time/place-based, meditative, healing work, matched with work that processes contemporary realities for women and non-binary folks as the world continues to increase its pace of living, among others. We encourage intersectional feminist approaches that include consideration of sexuality, race, ethnicity, class, and disability, among other social locations.

Woman Made Gallery is particularly, though not exclusively, interested in investigating the following conceptual questions for "Moments Like This":

  • Do you practice slow living? What does slow living look like for you?
  • In what way(s) have you deliberately chosen a slower pace or implemented simplicity in your daily routine? How has it changed your outlook on life?
  • How have you reclaimed your time in the last year? What have you said "no" to recently?
  • In 2-3 sentences, share a story from your life when you missed out on something special because you were too busy to live in and not living in the moment. What did this teach you?
  • How do you process and cope with stress?
  • What does your typical morning look like?
