Milford Photo is excited to announce an open themed juried group photo exhibition at Café Atlantique in downtown Milford, CT.

Show us your finest work! Open to all themes and styles, work of any genres, all perspectives on image making and the object that we call the photograph. This is a fantastic opportunity for both emerging and established photographers. Café Atlantique is a highly trafficked venue where exhibiting artists and photographers frequently have their work purchased by patrons of the café. The venue has a two year waiting list for those planning their own shows in the future. This is an opportunity to get your work out there, have a wide variety of people from all backgrounds view and appreciate it, have the opportunity to have your work honored as best in show, win prizes for select awards, and potentially sell your work to a lucky patron!

Submissions could include, but are not limited to: digital or film photographs, environmental portraiture, landscapes, photos of architecture or cityscapes, portraits, documentary photography, abstract photography, conceptual work, narrative work, still lives, street photographs, color photos, black and white photos, images of nature, long exposure photography, etc. The world is your oyster! Show us the work you’re most proud of. We want to see you think outside the box of standard cliche’s, don’t be afraid to take a risk with your submission! For an idea of the juror’s taste--look to the work of Richard Misrach, Gordon Parks, Nan Goldin, Robert Adams, Carrie Mae Weems, Gregory Crewdson, Lee Friedlander, Uta Barth, Robert Frank, Vivian Maier, William Eggleston, Alec Soth, Joel Sternfeld, Zanele Muholi, Susan Meiselas, Larry Sultan, Doug Dubois, Joel Meyerowitz, or Sian Davey.

Submission Deadline: March 15 at Midnight, 12:00 EST

Announcement of selected photographers by March 18
Deadline for photographers to send in their high resolution files: March 25th
Exhibition Dates: April 6 - 30, 2020
Opening Reception: Thursday April 9, 7-9:00 pm

The show will display 20 professionally framed photographs, printed, mounted, and framed at Milford Photo, after being selected by the jurors for exhibit at Café Atlantique.

Rules/Guidelines

‍If selected by our jurors to be included in the exhibition, the photographer will be required to pay a $50 participation fee. The participation fee covers the cost of our printing, mounting, as well as time/labor of framing and hanging of the work in the exhibition space. At the conclusion of the exhibition, all mounted exhibition prints will go home with the artist, this will not include the frame which we will keep on hand for future exhibitions. A professionally mounted 20”x24” print on Hahnemühle luster produced by our lab is normally valued at $54.

The photographers who are selected into the exhibition by the jurors must pay the participation fee and in doing so commit to providing a high resolution Tiff or JPEG file for our gallery to print, or they will not be included in the show. If the artist fails to provide a high resolution file large by the deadline, they will forfeit their entry into the exhibition. To ensure exhibition prints are of the highest quality, artists will not be allowed to provide their own framed work. All work will be produced in our digital lab at Milford Photo, and framed in house before being installed at Café Atlantique.

We have 20” x 24” black metal frames that will be used for this exhibition. Exhibition prints will be produced with a Canon professional wide format printer with archival inks on Heavyweight Hahnemühle Luster photo paper, in a color-calibrated environment. Each photo will be floated on a 20”x24” print, with the actual image size printed slightly smaller to allow for white borders on all sides (2”- 4”). The prints will be professionally mounted to acid free foam core. The prints will not be matted. The white border will ensure that photographer’s need not worry about the aspect ratio of their submitted work. For example, photos submitted with a 2x3 ratio will be printed at an image size of 13”x19” with 2.5” white borders on the left and right, 3.5” borders on top and bottom. Whereas photos with a 4x5 ratio would be printed 16”x20” with a 2” border all around. Exhibition Prints are final, and will not be reprinted. Only one print will be covered by the participation fee and produced by our lab, additional reprints will not be covered by the participation fee under any circumstances.

Please consider when submitting that Café Atlantique is not a professional for-profit gallery, but a café and exhibition space that is frequented by families and people of all ages. For this reason, particularly graphic or explicit imagery cannot be exhibited. All photos are welcome for submission, we simply ask that artist’s keep these guidelines in mind when submitting their work.

File agreement for accepted photographers: Milford Photo will print only one exhibition print per accepted photograph. If there is a sale inquiry at Café Atlantique, the photographer will be notified before a sale is confirmed. All rights remain with the photographer, Milford Photo will not keep the exhibition files past the closing of the exhibition. If an exhibition print sells, the cost of the work determined by the artist does not include the exhibition frame. 100% of the sale goes to the photographer. Café Atlantique and Milford Photo do not take any percentage of the sale. If the artist prefers that their work be not for sale, then their work will be marked not for sale (NFS) and the photographer will keep their mounted print after the conclusion of the exhibition. In the case that artists who price their work do not sell, each photographer gets to keep their mounted archival photograph. They do not keep the frame which is the property of Milford Photo.

Announcement: An announcement of photographer’s selected for the exhibition will be posted to our social media by March 18th. Selected photographers will be required to submit a high resolution file for print via wetransfer.com. For those who are selected to submit a high resolution file, a 16 bit TIFF file in Adobe RGB colorspace is preferred, but jpegs or other file types will be accepted. If you send in your file after the deadline of the 25th at Midnight 12:00 EST, your entry and spot in the exhibition will be forfeited.

Entry Fee: $5 per photo. Use PayPal to pay the entry fee after submitting through the application submission form. An individual artist can submit up to 5 photos. It is possible that an individual could have more than one image accepted to the exhibition, but submitting more than one image is not a requirement for entry.
