In this new artistic production of the Eye’s Walk Digital Festival, we invite the residents of Syros and international artists to co-create the psychogeographic map of Ermoupolis, starting with the coastal route from the Nisaki area to the Tarsana area

Get carried away with playful but creative mood and feel the emotional atmospheres of Ermoupoli along the coastal front of the city. Every city is a complex construction filled with various atmospheres, which while defining our mood and action within it, we tend to ignore. “Cities have psychogeographical contours, with constant streams of movement, fixed points and fixed angles, which discourage entry or exit from certain zones,” says Guy Debord*.

Do you feel the atmospheres of Ermoupolis?

The artwork “Ermoupolis: Psychogeographic Map (coastline)” invites participants not to obey existing opinions and common stories about Ermoupolis, but to slip away and with confidence listen to their own feelings and play with the city’s atmospheres.

Which places bring you joy? Which places cause feelings of insecurity? Which do you prefer in your free time? Which do you consider dirty? In which places would you prefer to meet...?

The result will be the creation of the Psychogeographic map of Ermoupolis, which, like a modern poem, will be capable of evoking strong emotions and new, dynamic relationships with the city.

We recognize that:

• Emotional atmospheres exist constantly and everywhere. «Every gathering, even if it is no more than a crowd on the street, is dominated by some sentiment»  (Park 1941: 369). (Anderson 2014, 40).

• The emotional atmospheres of a city can be mysterious or specific, incomplete or complete. They belong to the present and/or the past, and/or the future. They can be fluid or more solid, temporary or more enduring.

• «Affects can be, and are, attached to things, people, ideas, sensations, relations, activities, ambitions, institutions, and any number of other things, including other affects. (Sedgwick 2003: 19) (Anderson 2014, 9).

What we ask from residents and students/participants in the Open Call:

• Oral testimonies & narratives that are connected with a specific spatial and temporal place of the coastal route from Nisaki to Tarsana.

• Maximum duration of narratives is 2-2.5 minutes.

• Send an audio recording of the narrative in mp3 format to

 info@eyeswalk.gr

• Alternatively, send us a message at info@eyeswalk.gr and we will arrange the process of recording the oral testimony with trained researchers.

• For all oral testimonies that will be collected, ethical guidelines for recording oral histories will be followed.

What we ask from the artists and every other participant in the Open Call:

• To listen to the Emotional Atmospheres of Ermoupolis, as the body feels the same emotions.

• If they want to boldly connect them with the public space and its public history.

• The digital works that will be submitted (sound, video art, Augmented reality, virtual reality installation) can have a maximum duration of up to five (5) minutes.

• Performances can have a maximum duration of fifteen (15) minutes.

• Proposals that concern Routes within the city, outside the beach, are also welcome.

• Proposals that combine the artwork with educational activities will also be included in the final production.

What we offer to the selected artists/participants:

• Artists will be partially supported in their accommodation and transportation in Ermoupolis.

• We support artists, if they wish, to come into contact with local artistic groups, residents, and communities.

• It is possible for all or part of this production to be presented in the cities of Thessaloniki and Barcelona.

•The Eye’s Walk Digital team and curator Filia Milidaki are responsible for the artistic direction as well as the promotion-networking and expansion of the “Ermoupolis: Psychogeographical Map” project, internationally.

Part of the artistic production will be the design of a sound journey (soundscape/memoryscape installation), which the festival visitors will be able to listen to while walking along the seaside promenade of Ermoupolis.

The sound journey of oral narratives will be available in Greek and English through mobile phones and tablets.

Submit your works via the form here:
