Multidisciplinary Art, Essaouira, Morocco

Calling all artists to immerse themselves in the vibrant culture and history of Essaouira at Waxaw artist residency. We support and facilitate the professional development of cultural practitioners at all levels of their careers, from emerging to established artists.

The art residency is open from May to July 2023.

The Riad, located in an XVII sec building in the heart of Old Medina, offers the opportunity to immerse in the local culture and create art in a supportive and welcoming environment, in the UNESCO-protected world heritage city of Essaouira. We work in compliance with the local community's needs and we make space for collaboration to happen. It is an opportunity to explore the local artisan and art scene ( textile, jewellery, sculpture, woodwork…) and embrace the Moroccan culture in its unicity.

We provide

•  Access to our professional art equipment and supplies: whether you're a painter, musician, or photographer, we can help you with the materials you need to create your work. 
• A Holistic space where you can experience the traditional hammam and our well-being programmes designed to relax.
• Guided tours and cultural excursions: our team can help you discover the hidden gems of Morocco, from the seaside to the desert, and gain a deeper understanding of the local culture and history.
• A special programme to learn about the tastes of Moroccan cuisine from typical dishes to a personal and guided spice taste experience.
•  Opportunities for collaboration and networking: our artist residency program is designed to unite artists and foster community. You will have the opportunity to meet and work with other international artists.
• Access to local art communities and cultural exchange: we can help you connect with local artists, galleries, and other art-related organizations, to get you involved with the local art scene.
• Flexibility and freedom: our program is designed to be flexible and adaptable to your needs. You have the freedom to work at your own pace and will be provided with the proper support to make it happen.
• Performance and exhibition opportunities: we provide you with a space to showcase your work and perform if needed.

Duration of residency

1 week to one month upon request.

Accommodation

Artists stay in the Riad, accommodation features a private bedroom and bathroom.

The space has 3 private studio rooms, a private studio room, a personal terrace, a fully equipped large kitchen and dining room, a living room, yoga and relaxation room.

Single artists will be accommodated in private rooms with a private bathroom according to availability.

All disciplines are welcome.

Fees and support

This is a self-directed fee-paying residency. Please enquiry and specify the dates preferred in your request.
