Eligibility:

The Texas Open Call is our primary resource for identifying artists who are interested in and eligible for participation in Artpace’s International Artist-in-Residence Program. All Texas resident artists who apply will first have their materials reviewed for eligibility. All artists who pass this eligibility check will be reviewed on a rolling basis by Artpace staff and guest curators. Studio visits will take place in 2020.

ABOUT ARTPACE

Since opening in 1995, Artpace has served as an international laboratory for the creation and advancement of contemporary art. Our residencies, exhibitions, and public programs nurture the creative expression of emerging and established artists, while actively engaging youth and adult audiences. Artpace is housed in an 18,000-square-foot facility renovated by the eminent San Antonio firm Lake/Flato Architects. The 1920s building, once a Hudson automobile dealership, is located in the vibrant downtown cultural district, one block from the city’s famous River Walk.

ABOUT ARTPACE’S INTERNATIONAL ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM

Artpace annually hosts three residencies (spring, summer, and fall). Each residency includes one Texas artist, one national artist, and one international artist, all selected by a guest curator. The eight-week residency culminates in a two-month exhibition onsite. The mission of this program is to provide artists from varied disciplines with unparalleled resources and support that allows them to experiment with new ideas and take provocative risks. More than 240 artists at various stages in their careers have been selected to participate in the program.

An Artpace residency includes travel expenses, a living stipend, a materials budget, an apartment, and studio/exhibition space. Resident artists have access to fully-equipped wood and metal workshops and a digital media studio, in addition to technical and administrative support. The residency is followed by a two-month exhibition of the project created, which is documented for Artpace’s archive.
